I'd actually be wary of women insist on nursing their old pets who are sick, disabled and in pain rather than putting them to sleep.

Many have a form of munchausens by proxy where they love the nurse role more than they care for the animal and if they get their hands on an ill or disabled human they will keep them incapacitated for as long as possible too.
