Yeah for real. It would be nice to have more veteran lesbians. Lol. From a time before our own community hated us.

Yeah, I hear you. You know what was different then? I think it might have actually been easier in some regards. I think pre and post Stonewall (alcoholism was rampant because) we had bars. We also had other spaces, especially in that short window from like the mid 70s through the early 2000s. Before Stonewall, in some places the mob got paid off to let us exist and to prevent cop raids. It was protection money. But unlike now and despite all the really horrible problems, through the early aughts, we at least had places to gather and find each other. Most men would leave when confronted. And the ones who wouldn't were not befriended or welcomed. Of course then, as now, women were not able to legally "discriminate" in a business setting. The biggest problem lesbians have is that the law for the most part does not allow us to create women-only spaces unless they are completely private and therefore financially unviable. Another difference is your sisters' had your back. I think now the 2nd biggest challenge comes from women who want to be 'inclusive' and prove their pc credentials by pretending it's all one big happy party.

Now would be a great time to start archiving our history and reaching out to older the remaining older dyke communities while they still exist. I’ve been saving lesbian focused magazines and zines to keep others from erasing us entirely.

I'm 67, so I guess I qualify as an elder. It was dangerous to be out, and I was naturally very shy, also insecure, so I was in the closet except for a few selected people I knew. When I was young the second wave of the women's liberation movement was in full swing, which is what gave me the courage to live as a lesbian at all. Since my generation was feminist and my parents' was not, I did (wrongly) assume they were outdated and lacking any real understanding of the world, but now I see that belief as illogical. I mean, ask a 20 year old if she thinks she knows more now than she will in 20 years. Anyways, my involvement with the lesbian community was limited, but I did have some.

Elders are still out there somewhere though...perhaps not from any decade before the 60s and 70s, but they’re still out there. I hope I can be given the chance to find them again soon

Nowadays it is cool to hate second wave feminists and old lesbians. Here (in my country) I saw LGBT people were praising when in UK 20 year old trans hit 60 years old lesbian.

We had a few back on the old sub. I hope they make it over here, I used to save so many of their comments and reread them for strength.

Bookmark, support, collect, and archive. Are bots on Saidit a thing? Something like a link archiving bot could do us wonders.

I really hope LesbianofDistinction makes it over.

that's me! I name changed ages ago because I lost the login details to the other account. At the ripe old age of 37, not sure I'm an 'elder' but I know my shit, at least.

if you have a gay friendly house of worship in your area you might be able to find some old school lesbian elders. this is one area where gay men have it worse than us, as the gay male population was decimated during the AIDS epidemic

They don't have it worse. Guys are allowed to have clubs and the exclusivity of male-only bars is mostly respected by women.

Blessed be Bev Jo!
