That explains some things. A straight woman online friend I know, close to my age, is crazy about drag queens, but told me she was repulsed by "trans women." For myself, as a lesbian, I struggle to make sense out of being either a "f*g hag" or a "trans maiden." I can't see what women see in either.

It's the older women I don't get, especially women in the 55-80 who are trans maidens.

Women, including older women (that would be my age group; I'm 67), have also been groomed via "upbringing" from their earliest days to fight men's battles for them for as long as I can remember, maybe more. One would hope that they would finally be able to think their way out of that bag and become wiser, more mature and good women, but apparently not all women can, will (or even want to?) do so. This means that the nurturing, mentoring and upbringing of girls from our earliest years is really important.

They know exactly what men demand of them. Men demand that women fight men's battles for them while they (the men) just sit on their narrow asses and let the women do it for them.

This demand of men that women fight their battles is communicated in many ways, overt and subliminal, from the very earliest days of a girl child's "upbringing" (a more appropriate word would be "procuring.")

Except if the X has a transposed SRY on it. I agree with you, don't want to nitpick, just going by what you said about the SRY, not the Y per se, being determinative. Yes, the SRY gene is normally and mostly found on the Y chromosome, except in the case of rare transpositions to the X.

It can only be understood as a type of lobotomy women have undergone by the programming of women's minds via all the outlets of male propaganda in the society. Their media, their schools, their religions, their professions, psychology, psychiatry, philosophy, everything. Our minds are literally programmed in this society by the ruling class of men the same way they program computers. That's all it is.

I am sorry only over my choice of words, but I STILL don't know that you do or don't feel the way you do on the basis of sex. Women can also be sexist, consciously OR unconsciously. Attacking a woman on the basis of her being power seeking is sexist. You attacked me first, basically telling me I wasn't getting women anywhere by trusting Hillary, but you didn't even notice your own fucking attack because it was on me, not you. However, I doubt that you consider me to be worth any apology from you. So fucking leave me alone, you make me sick.

I am not going to apologize for pointing out what looked like sexism to me, especially in a woman centric space. Hillary is the brunt of a huge amount of misogynist hatred in this country which I think she doesn't deserve, she is a fellow woman and I wanted to defend her. I am sorry you are so upset at what you see as a personal attack on you by me, but it really wasn't intended that way. Saying that I thought a specific comment of yours seemed sexist is not the same as calling you a sexist. As I said, I guess I shouldn't have said "reeked of sexism", that was a poor choice of words, and I am sorry for that. Anyway, I just don't care enough about you as an individual to "personally attack" and/or "specifically target" you, so why don't we just end this here?

Maybe I shouldn't have said "reeking" of sexist bias, but I still see your comment as very similar, maybe identical to, the usual takedowns of women. It's funny that you're so hot under the collar over it, like I'm trying to take away your right to make "your decisions" and hate Hillary if you want to. I couldn't care less. But you sure didn't convince me that your criticism of Hillary was any less sexist than I originally thought it might be.

There is a conversation currently going on on MSNBC about sexist bias in the treatment of women candidates in which they are criticized and undermined for being "ambitious" and "seeking power", while male candidates with the same traits are called "rising stars." Your comment reeks of that sexist bias, exactly. The same thing is being done to the current vice presidential candidates being considered by Joe Biden. "Transgender" people set themselves up for failure in dating by "identifying as" the sex that they're not rather than the sex that they are. People who want women want women, not a man who "identifies as" a woman, and people who want men want men, not a woman who "identifies as" a man. By setting their sights on dating those who are NOT attracted to the sex which they are, they set up their own failures.

And why do men always feel so comfortable defining womanhood?

Their most revered religious tracts, the Old Testament of the Christians / the Torah of the Jews, dating from far earlier than the birth of Christ, defined women as the second created, who were created solely as companions and helpmates ("meets") for men. And to this day, as we have seen, men are trying to confine us to that role, as being solely for them and not for ourselves. This is true not only of conservative "religious" men, but of the most "progressive", left wing, atheists, "feminists", "trans women", the whole mess of men. This shows the human male sex is completely irredeemable, and we'd really be better off without them.

Everything I wrote indicates that I already understand the meanings of the words you are now endeavoring to explain to me, so don't bother me with redundant explaining. Language is very important in getting meanings across, as the work of Mary Daly abundantly demonstrates. She said that women have had the power of naming stolen from us and invented quite a few woman identified words herself. TRAs also understand the importance of language, as demonstrated by their efforts to twist the meanings of words to our detriment. TRAs are not the only ones on earth who coin new language, interpret old language in new ways and / or who have the right to touch language in any way. Please do not equate my second wave, woman identified choices of which language to use and which not to use with the putrid, misogynistic deeds of the TRAs. Thank you.

I'm not "arguing from a "subjective, personal point of view." It is a FACT that these "generic" terms, such as "human being" , "person" , "homosexual" are not true generics in that they mostly refer to men and leave out women. Try reading any "history of mankind" or treatise about "the homosexual." My subjectivity consists only in my experiencing of the term "homosexual" as more ugly and clinical than the term "homophobic" for some reason.

But yes, one advantage (the only one I can think of) for the word "homosexual" is that it specifies sex, homoSEXual, not homoGENDERal.

"Homophobia" still seems like a mostly male identified term to me, but it may occasionally be used when speaking of both sexes. However I don't like it when speaking of lesbians alone for the reason I gave. I am still against the word "homosexual" for women as it has more of an ugly, clinical sound to my ears even than "homophobia". That may be highly subjective, but that's how I experience the two terms.

"Overthinking", yep, sounds like me (really). Will agree to disagree. I'm also not against the use of "homophobia" either, but my reaction was prompted by the fact that that is the word I ALWAYS see used, never "lesbophobia."

I didn't "feel the need" to "interrupt" or "correct" you. I just feel the ABSENCE of the female identified term "lesbophobia" in almost every instant in which it is in fact lesbophobia and not generalized, overall homophobia which is being discussed. Women are left out so often in overall discussions of "humanity" and the like that one would think that the opportunity to say loud and clear "Hey we are discussing WOMEN here" would be welcome.

You don't need to use the word "homosexual" to define lesbians. "Women (as in females) who are exclusively attracted to those of the same sex" does just fine for a definition of lesbianism.

"Homosexual" includes women the way "humanity" or "mankind" includes women. That is, we're "included", but not really. It's been that way all my life and I'm 67. You can use it, but without specifying the inclusion of women, as in "lesbians and gay men" or "homosexual men AND WOMEN" everyone just assumes it's all about men. You can't speak of "homosexuals" alone, with no mention of women or lesbians, without having almost NOBODY thinking of women. The literal meaning of the word "homosexual" being "same sex" does not mitigate this situation. "Homosexual", btw, means "same sex" in Greek, but in Latin the word "homo" means "man", so "homosexual" would be "man sex."

Also, and this is only my own personal feeling about the word, "homosexual" is an ugly and clinical term which seems fine to me for describing male sexual relations if that's how they want to describe their gay relations, but doesn't come close to doing justice to woman identified love.

However, we have to admit that "lesbian" is also a pretty weird word for women with same sex attraction. A Lesbian, in the original sense of the word, is somebody who resides on /originates from the island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea, and as such men as well as women are and have been Lesbians.

It's my view that most trans people are just trying to survive the best they can in a culture that hates gender nonconformity.

Yes, but doing that by claiming to be what they are not, namely the other sex, is just so cowardly. When I was a kid (1960s-70s) we were "gender non conforming" and honestly and openly the sex that we were. Saying you are a "woman" just because you don't conform exactly to the prescribed role of a man (and vice versa for women) just shows a capitulation to gender norms which is in fact not a bit brave.

I actually found her pov rather refreshing. It is sobering that some women would find it "offensive" and actually feel strongly enough about it to write a post condemning it. I've read a lot of second wave literature about male violence against women, so I'm not exactly ignorant of the subject and I do take precautions. I think the depressing thing about how women's vulnerability is usually discussed here is that it is described in extensive detail and the conclusion is basically that we can do NOTHING about it. So it really just engenders female helplessness.

Don't put words into my mouth. I am responding to your assertion that no woman can ever beat any man, and that if she does she's an "outlier." That there is no overlap at all in strength between men and women, just two entirely mutually exclusive "strength" classes, based on sex. I think that the accomplishments of the outliers point as much to the unfulfilled and unrecognized potential of many women as they do to the talents and skills of the outliers themselves. I think women on average are not as strong as men and as such we have every right to our own sports competitions without them. We also have a right to them for purposes of setting our own boundaries.

As to "protection from men", brings to mind the old protection racket (women need men to protect them from men.) I think women need protection from the protection racket, and are perfectly capable of devising our own means of protection.

She didn't just beat "an old guy", she beat a retired tennis professional who had been "training a lot" all his life and was still "training a lot" in order to make good on his boast. And the match was not "for fun." It was at the height of the women's liberation movement of the 1970s when both men's and women's feelings were running high on the subject, and was in deadly earnest for both. And I disagree with your dismissal of young, talented women as "outliers."

[–]chrysthefeminist 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I agree with you. I am not convinced by the dismissing of girls like you who played sports and were equal to boys who played sports as "outliers" and "exceptions." Boys are given a lot more encouragement and often instruction and access to equipment than girls are and just about everything needed to develop strength and athletic ability. It's like living in a society where only boys are educated and then saying the fact that they can read and do math better than girls is due to superior intellect on their part. We don't fall for that one anymore, though once it was commonly believed. I think that's the stage we are still at in beliefs about girls' physical abilities and falling for it is doing a number on our heads. Yes, I think males do have an advantage and are stronger on average after puberty, but even that is not set in stone for all time, though that is an entirely different story.

Riggs had been boasting and boasting about how even an old codger like him could beat one of the current women pros, so he wouldn't have thrown it on purpose. Also, watching in on the match, I saw him on a break gulping water like he was about to die. After the game he burbled about "a re-match, a re-match." She beat him fair and square.
