Not quite a victory yet, but on its way. It needs to get passed through the Senate (and other legal measures) before being federal law.

Under the House bill, states could still restrict gay marriage if the Supreme Court overturns its prior ruling. But such states would be required to recognize marriages that occurred in states where they remain legal.

Still gives states the right to say no for themselves, but if a couple gets married in a state where it IS allowed, even the non-accepting states have to legally recognize it.

This was the case in the past and led to problems because people could get married then move and later try to get divorced in another state and the new state would refuse to divorce people because that state only recognized the marriage as a contract agreed to in the other state.

Which is just petty.

I heard NPR talking about this this morning, and they were using the term "same-sex marriage."

Funny how when shit gets real, we revert to the terms that matter, not "same-gender marriage."

Yep, I’ve noted this welcome pivot as well and I personally make sure to use “legalization of same-marriage” and “right to same-sex marriage” in place of imprecise language like “marriage equality.”

Notably the marriage bill in question also refers to “sex” not gender because even the Democrats must recognize that “same-gender [identity]” marriage has never been outlawed or under threat, nor has the right of a heterosexual couple to call themselves gay.

I'm not so sure that this is the case. The issue is likely that all these laws in the country were written before gender started being used as a replacement for sex. So all the state laws are written with the correct vocabulary saying "sex" therefore any laws which reference those laws in general must follow the same vocabulary. If not then the laws are meaningless and are wide open to law suits. Yes the people who write the laws are trying to be performatively woke but also most of these people are lawyers and they know how to say things in such a way to get the end result.

You’ve said it more clearly than I did, but yes this is what I meant. By Democrats I’m referring to the Democratic politicians and their teams behind the bill. They’re basically forced to talk in the language of sex in the bill to achieve the result they want. Because when it comes to actual discrimination, it happens on the basis of one’s sex not their internal sense of self.
