In their response, they predictably blamed the far-right conservative media for taking it out of context. They've taken the video down and stated they are actively working to "control the narrative". Guys, I think that ship has sailed.

Of course it's not them that made this terrible, terrible decision - of course it's the far-right that's to blame for taking this TOTALLY tongue-in-cheek song for something it's not.

For what it's worth, I'm not a conservative, and I didn't find the video facetious. I felt the tone was arrogant, narcissistic, and baiting.

Also not a conservative and found it arrogant, narcissistic and baiting-- and blatantly disrespectful to actual victims of conversion therapy.

Including the victims of modern-day conversion therapy, the LGB people who are told, "You'd be better off as a 'straight trans person' than as a privileged, nasty 'cis gay' like you are. You should be ashamed of your same-sex attraction."

Absolutely. It was SMUG and grating and prissy and not funny or amusing. Just flaming shit and ammo for gay-haters for years. Another thing, the Gay Men's Chorus has a pretty good reputation until now- I see defenders saying "It's the GMC!" but in the video the star is some 20-something smug prick. Another gay institution trashing itself. Get me out of here.

I believe that was their point in the first place, to be provocative, to cross boundaries, to be quee.. oh wait!

In their response, they predictably blamed the far-right conservative media for taking it out of context.

I will play devil's advocate here and say that there's some merit to this assessment, as the ones who threw a fit about this were the usual culture war obsessed, outrage machine clickbait garbage media.

The framing of this as some kind of big conspiracy with 'the gays' trying to convert children is pure bs.

Facebook/online gay-bashers will get years of memes and fake news out of this one stupid video. Christmas came early for those people this year.

Christmas

But don't say 'Happy Homophobic Holidays' (which is nicely alliterative) because they hate that too. Also something something red cups?

While I do agree that the homophobic crowd took this and ran with it, I'm also seeing it questioned and criticized in places on the internet that are far more centrist or even left-leaning. Outside of the extremes, the normies appear overwhelmingly not pleased.

Unfortunately, I think several years of trans-insanity has really upset a lot of the regular population and people have been pushed a bit further to the edge of not being quite as accepting as they have been. And also, it was a terrible, terrible idea to target the children in this song, even...jokingly. People that might not care much or even be supportive otherwise are having a hard time with that.

I would argue this is actually a good thing, as it prevents the criticism of shit like this to become the monopoly of anti-gay grifters.

For me, the biggest absurdity is that nowadays the LGB is unfortunately always paired with the TQ+ crap...and they ARE trying to fuck ( with ) kids. That's the thing. Trans-kids, MAPs, there's a disturbing rise of pro-pedo narrative bandying around the internet and the alphabet people and something like this, regardless of the tongue-in-cheek nature, had no chance not to implode and catch everyone in the blast radius regardless of their connections to it.

It's like they woke up and said 'how can we shit all over the last few decades of LGB acceptance today?'
If their intent was to mock the "we're coming for your kids" bit then they failed spectacularly. They only reinforced it.
