Interesting. Here in the United States, a heterosexual married couple I know spent over $30,000 on IVF, and it never worked. (They were finally able to adopt a baby.)

I hear that adoption in America is ridiculously expensive though.

It is. My sister and brother-in-law are trying to do it now.

Adoptive parents shouldn’t have to pay for the process. The state government should.

It was expensive, and they were investigated like you wouldn't believe. They discovered that the husband had seen a psychiatrist at one point, years earlier, and wanted a detailed account of what that was about. They went into every detail of their personal lives.

I’m all for some amount of red tape to make sure that abusive people don’t get to adopt, but there shouldn’t be this much red tape. No parent is perfect. Human beings are flawed creatures.

I go back and forth between a kid needing male and female parents and that not being particularly important. I know teenage boys and girls need that older same sex parent like figure as a role model. That said, through the work that I've done I've encountered a lot of kids (well, former kids) who grew up in horrific environments with parents or adults who abused and/or neglected them. Like if you're a normal person you can't imagine the things some people do to children. So I think that providing a kid with a safe and stable home, with attentive parents that love them puts you like 90% of the way there (and is also one of the most amazing things you can do for a person). So I go back and forth on this one.

There is nothing like having a mother and father rising you together. However, having two same sex parents is still close and they can do a job to raise a child right. That said, a child with two dads is going to need his or her aunts more than a typical child would, but most people have aunts or uncles or grandparents or neighbours they get along with anyway.

My relative did this with their spouse. It cost similar amounts(partially subsidized); It eventually worked out in their case, though. The hoops one will go through for a chance of progeny..
