I know someone who really did this. When she moved in with her long-term bf, she dyed her hair a neon color and came out as queer.

Hey now, she identifies as NoN BiNaRy GeNdErQuEeR.

Now, her boyfriend just considers himself a regular straight dude, but you know how it works. She said the magic words, they're kweer now.

I heard you don’t even need a funky hair color anymore!

It's sad that so many straight people are so desperate to be anything but straight. What exactly do they think they're missing out on? Nobody has ever been able to answer.

Attention

[–][deleted] 18 insightful - 1 fun18 insightful - 0 fun19 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Attention. Something I feel the vast majority of LGB people want less of. Equal treatment is the only reason attention was searched for in the first place.

This. I don’t want the center of my personality to be that I’m a lesbian and I don’t want it to be what everyone focuses on. I want to be a regular person who so happens to be a lesbian.

A personality.

It's covering all bases.

The person is still straight and get all social and legal benefits from being straight. On the other hand, in the few spaces that are more welcoming of non-straight people they can also claim to be non-straight.

Woker-than-thou-ness (or at least such is my impression).

Seems like lefty-type straight people now often regard heterosexuality as insufficiently-PC (even suspect). To the point that they sometimes even feel the need to apologize for it (along with being white, male, and/or-- ugh-- "cis", of course). "Queerness" = unimpeachable liberal credentials, apparently.

May be an attempt at self-protection, as the left grows increasingly radical, and eager to cancel its own if they don't keep up.

A lot of them are the dreaded "cishet white middle class" (note: I don't really think "cis" is a thing, but you know what I mean. Non-dysphoric.)

They run in social circles where everyone claims it's important to CeNtER MaRGiNaLiZeD V0iCeS but in actuality they all want to keep attention on themselves.

"Queer" = "I don't secretly hate my boy/girlfriend like the Internet and shitty sitcoms taught me to expect and sometimes we have kinky sex, therefore we're not akshully straight."

well, penis in vagina sex is no longer considered "straight sex" if, for example, the "vagina haver" is a trans masc non binary queer femme.

What I hate most about this is I'm old enough to remember when queer was a slur and have had it used against me during corrective rape and other violence. When straight people refer to themselves as queer it makes me feel really shitty. You can't "take back" a slur that never belonged to you.

Isn't it interesting how it's different from racial issues? When people say "all lives matter", people reply that sure, all lives matter, but people use the sentence "black lives matter" because they want to talk about the issues that black people in specific go through.

But when it comes to LGBTQ+ we're absolutely supposed to be "all lives matter".

community

That's where a lot of the mess comes from. Historically, there WAS a genuine gay community where we lived in neighborhoods, went to bookshops, went to bars, theaters, movie theaters, etc.... There were lesbian communities.

There is no and has never been an LGBTQIA+++ community. Why would there be? It's the modern equivalent of a shotgun marriage where they force us all into the same room and expect us all to get along.
