False.

Goth is an aesthetic and a choice, not a pejorative many may use to name-call.

Being another insulting name is not by choice. And many of these poor folks try other genres on, and often fail.

Whether you think they are both or not is up to you.

She didn't seem surprised about the presence of the wrought iron fence: but merely that it was recently painted black.

Her retarded father must have had painted his wrought iron fence white.

Foolish homeowner mistakes like that aren't easy to forgive, and it will be an issue in a few years when the black paint peels and the white undercoat stands out.

Also these people appear to be ethnically of German descent.

Their time could be better spent investigating their cultural Visigoth and Ostrogoth roots. Actual gothic history.

And stop shopping for his daughter at Hot Topic.

I guess it's easier to ignore history, and paint your home black.

Edit: Rather than painting the house, he should trade in his car for a used hearse.

Featuring scenes ahead of their time on a budget from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetsuo_II:_Body_Hammer

Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (鉄男II Body Hammer) is a 1992 Japanese tokusatsu body horror film directed by Shinya Tsukamoto.[2] It is a bigger-budget sequel to Tsukamoto's 1989 film Tetsuo: The Iron Man, utilizing similar themes and ideas as his first film, and largely the same cast, though the story is not a direct continuation of that of its predecessor. In Body Hammer, a Japanese salary man, played by cult actor Tomorowo Taguchi, finds his body transforming into a weapon through sheer rage after his son is kidnapped by a gang of violent thugs.

"My passion meat is ass! Can't eat enough of it! Butthole is always on the food pyramid!" - Yet another example of goth Youtuber Cemetery Confessions being gross, inappropriate and oversexed towards his unsuspecting interview subjects once again by ISaidWhatISaid in Gothic

[–]ISaidWhatISaid[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Let me state once again just how much I despise Cemetery Confessions. He profiles himself as this supposed subcultural researcher/academic, a scholarly commentator and participant in the goth subculture, but then he goes and pulls such an obvious "Marilyn Manson" on his interview subjects. You can tell from listening to the above excerpt that they did not expect such a gross and inappropriate comment to tossed out smack-dab in the middle of the interview, and that they are only laughing nervously because he's making them feel uncomfortable and they just don't know how to tell him off. Since he's the interviewer and they are on his podcast, they probably feel like they have to put up with his gross comments. Cemetery Confessions is very clearly pornsick IMO, because there is no way you would do such a thing to your unsuspecting interview subjects unless you expect everyone around you to be as pornsick and desensitized to such gross comments as you are. This behaviour is completely unacceptable and I resent the way this man "Dani" has become such a self-appointed representative of the subculture.

Dressed In Black is a series of mixes, exploring the musical origins of the various Goth related music movements. Covering artists from 1924 - 1977 in three volumes. It's impossible for anyone to pin down ALL of the darkly inclined music of the past, but I tried to do a pretty comprehensive job at it.

I listen to my local community radio sometimes. They have some lawyer show and this motherfucker was on there praising Cheney or Rumsfeld the other day, I couldn't believe it. They have a show for the jail too, you call in and give shoutouts to your peeps.

One cool thing I have found with NPR, is that if you can get enough NPR stations at once, the secondary NPR will play cool shit like their music shows. Like on the weekends.

Not in Houston. Our relatively few stations were at one time pretty much all owned by Clear Channel Communications, which became iHeartRadio. It's all corporate radio. All the commercials are synced. And there hasn't been a memorable local DJ since Outlaw Dave.

94.5 The Buzz, the alternative station is playing Basket Case by Green Day right now. That's really typical, it's mostly 90s music, has been playing the same songs for 30 years -- including Zombie. You can listen to it on Alexa if you want, although it usually sucks hardest during the day.

Manson and Korn were never Goth, Goth in the 1990s were bands like The Wake, Rosetta Stone, Love Like Blood, Suspiria, Paralysed Age, This Ascension, and Requiem In White to name a few.

[–]ISaidWhatISaid[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Years back I discovered that "gothic" is fetish tag on Fetlife, and how William Control had used his "Neu Romanics" gothic brand to market himself to baby goths and emos who got into goth as they aged. Angela Benedict on Youtube talking about the IRL consequences of Fetlife and their users fetishizing gothic or suggesting there is an automatic connection between kink/BDSM and gothic. A lot of gothic fashion borrows from BDSM gear and fetish wear, but (at least in my personal experience) a lot of goths are actually very sexually conservative and not into kink at all. A lot of them, especially the gothic females, are true believers in romantic ideals of love, like lifelong monogamy and dedication to their "twin flame". The idea that goth chicks are freaky and kinky promoted on Fetlife and elsewhere is quite harmful to these women who just like the fashion/music but aren't into kink and hate being associated with that. I do think William Control exploited that Fetlife association between goth and BDSM with his Neu Romantics gothic brand. It's very likely that this created the perception in his younger fans (some of whom he ended up hooking up with) that to be gothic you have to be into BDSM as all. Like BDSM was part and parcel of the lifestyle.

I think groupies are groupies because they like to openly brag about all the famous people they've had sex with. Why else have sex with someone famous? You know it's a one-night-stand, you know you will never have a real relationship with them. So what's the benefit of having sex with someone famous, knowing it's going to lead to nothing? The only benefit for these women is the social clout that comes with being able to say: "I've had sex with a VIP.".

From the article:

But as the Big Tiddy Goth continues her reign as the internet’s most unrequited crush, a burning question has emerged: Does the Big Tiddy Goth Girlfriend have a male counterpart? Where is her Big Dick Goth Boyfriend, and what in the Edgar Allen Poe has he been doing all this time?

Throw a hypothetical venti dick in the mix, and the appeal is undeniable. Imagine a dude so secure in his masculinity — or so uncommitted to it — that he tucks his giant cock into a pair of sheer black tights and empties a canister of volumizing hair spray into his mane before popping a Blu-ray of The Crow into your Xbox One. Imagine a man that lets you paint his nails and line his lids with Maybelline Liquid Eyeliner in Black Comet #510, but consoles you with a church organ rendition of “Love Will Tear Us Apart” when it turns out he looks so much better in it than you. Bask in the fantasy of him knowing this has no bearing on his sexuality — but that he’d be open to the experience if it did — and plunge into the deep, dark expanse of his emotions, which he’s written, in a locked diary, using the ink of his own blood. Later on, you’ll kiss under the full moon, the black of his lipstick tinting your mouth with the morbid stain of the undead.

That’s not to say that all goth men are effeminate, androgynous or even progressive. The only “girly” thing about Nick Cave was his impossibly voluminous hair, and Peter Murphy of Bauhaus barely dipped a toe in with his modest guyliner. Even Type O Negative’s legendary Peter Steele — who isn’t actually goth but is constantly conflated with it — was famously cis and heteronormative. Despite generating a reputation as The Quintessential Goth Boyfriend™ with his fully-nude Playgirl spreads, face-melting Jerry Springer appearances and an ever-growing reputation as a groupie magnet, the 6-foot-8, raven-haired Adonis was vocally opposed to having male admirers, and seemed to have more in common with John Wayne than Joy Division.

This comment:

I feel the same sentiment, it's becoming counterproductive, this movement, it's being battered into our heads that we are completely helplessness, frail, childlike creatures without any responsibility. Western world is becoming crazy, the social media, news media. Although personally I do believe he spiraled out of control, listening to so many people coming out, his own bragging about violence. I was rooting for Evan when I heard about the Phoenix Act, because there shouldn't be such short time window for victims to come forward. But last few days, how she's going on about has started to change my mind. Instead of seeing actual proof, there's pictures of her in a nazi outfit as some sort of proof of Manson's abuse, sorry at 18 years old, or 16 years old, if someone wanted to dress me up as Hitler, or Stalin, I'd bite their face off, because my country was a battle ground for these two evil empires. Another, I don't like her saying that everyone around her is accountable for the abuse she endured, well as she could've bee charmed, so equally other people could've been charmed. So it's not fair to blame others. Also I'm pretty sure she'd defend him back them, if people did say something. Next, how she treated Dita. She proudly, openly showed off their relationship, rubbed it in Dita's face, while they were still married, that's not very nice a woman to another woman. And at 18 you should know better, because we do have conscience, no matter the age. I wouldn't want to hurt anyone like that. Lastly, I don't like her commenting on other people's allegations not related to her. Like this Armie Hammer thing, his girlfriend has released all their intimate Dom Sub sexts, so far that for me seems like revenge porn. We can't just jump and cancel a guy because a woman, who has posted all their intimate details online accuses him. I mean so far these are only allegations on Instagram. But Evan already is posting about it, as we would know for sure. I'm a woman, but I also have been blackmailed with revenge porn. And it triggered me, as I fond that very abusive. If he raped her, than yes, he needs to go to jail. But how can we tell by their master slave texts what is real?

Hey TheTasteOfEspionage, thank you for sharing your thoughts. The reason I brought up the Sisters of Mercy t-shirt that said "fuck me and marry me young" is that, if you're going down the slippery slope of political correctness, that t-shirt too could be constituted as sexist or misogynistic or making fun of child brides, or making light of the infantilization of women. Once you get into that politically correct outrage-mindset, anything can appear to be offensive, including a band t-shirt with the statement "fuck me and marry me young.".

With regards to goths jumping on the band wagon of political correctness, denouncing supposed racism in goth (of which there is very little, but I guess when your head is a hammer everything is a potential nail) and declaring their support of BLM, What is the difference between this "listening to right wing bands will eventually turn you into a raving killing Nazi", and "watching BDSM movies will eventually make you rape and torture people and turn you into a literal Jack the Ripper"? Pray do tell, what is the difference between the two? I can definitely see the hypocrisy here in the one-sided slippery slope argument being made here. If you're gonna argue that things can become a slippery slope, why stop at condemning right wing bands? Go ahead and condemn all the gothic metal bands that have Christian iconography, since the Christian Church has killed millions around the world surpassing even the Nazis in kill-count. Metallica have a song called Creeping Death based on the story from the Old Testament, perhaps they are implicitly endorsing Israel's zionism and the killing of Palestinians in an act of crypto-islamophobia? Seriously, when you get on your moral high horse to ride it into the dark night, when/where do you stop? Nothing is ever politically correct enough for the politically correct purist.

I am still of the belief that these people denouncing Aurora's offensiveness completely misunderstand and misrepresent what the subculture gothic set out to accomplish for decades, which a form of radical individualism that is directly at odds with the aims of the SJW censorfascists. Anti-racism and progressive politics are nobel goals for sire, but that's not what the SJW censorfascists want, they just want to pull on people's heartstrings for the sake of gaining power and control. I am willing to bet these people denouncing Aurora have never really listened to or studied the lyrics of albums like Antichrist Superstar or Holy Wood. I know you're gonna say Manson is not gothic, but Manson was the gateway drug for a lot millennial goths. Manson's music was all about encouraging people to recognize the little Hitler inside themselves rather than projecting a holier-than-thou attitude like the author of this article. Instead of examining their own fascistic tendencies, these SJWs have absolved themselves of any blame simply because they assume themselves to have the right opinions and couldn't possibily be wrong. Manson had a chapter in his autobiography, The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions, a truism that is entirely lost on these self-righteous SJW censorfascists. I, at the age of 40, have no time to entertain this kind of SJW holier than thou purity-policing BS. I totally support Nargal's right to wear anti-Antifa shirts if he wants to - I particularly identify with Nargal (whose music I have posted in this sub) at a very deep level because like him I too spent most of 30s in the courts with ignorant malicious SJWs who wanted to censor me for speaking my truth. I also supported people's right to wear a "Jesus Is a Cunt" Cradle of Filth t-shirt back in the 1990s, no matter how much that offended the fundies. SJW censorfascists have no place in art and are the enemies of everything art aspires to and stands for. Rather than demanding that we unite against politician X and in favour of cause Y, I suggest we unite against these SJW censorfascists and put an end to their censorship under the guise of concern-trolling before it spreads like a plague through the arts. For if these SJWs get their way, you will not be able to speak out against politician X or in favour of cause Y when you personally want to if you allow such censorfascists to set the agenda for a whole movement.

I feel that gothic Youtubers and public figures, like for example Angela Benedict in her recent video, disingenously deny that Eurocentrism as a form white supremacy has always been part of the gothic subculture's DNA, and pretend that simplying denying this is how to declare yourself in allyship with blacks. Does Angela Benedict, who insists "blacks have always been part of gothic", actually read some of the comments left under her video by black people in goth?

Random black guy here. I've never seen another black person at a goth music event other than myself. I've never seen another black person who visually appears to be a goth. I've never seen a black person in any goth band except for the dude that was with The Cure way back in the day. Someone tell me some of these other bands so I can explore this.

There would not have been white gothic music without black/Carribean dub music and you can quote me on this. The prominent bass that is so typical to gothic music is 100% derived from dub bass line. Just listen to She's In Parties, that's undeniably a dub riff.

However, white supremacy and Eurocentrism have also always been part of goth's DNA and it would be extremely disingenuous to deny this enduring aspect of the gothic timeline. Look for example at how respected the racist artist Allerseelen was in the gothic scene in the late 1990s/early aughts. No one ever called him out on his "Blood and Soil" bullshit when I was younger, even though his views were widely known. In fact, I myself once had a ballet review rejected from a website because I took a dance company to task for dancing to his music. I paid the price for calling out racism before it became profitable and acceptable to do so. I therefore laugh at all these SJWs-come-lately like Angela who only decided that they had a problem with racism in the goth scene when it became safe and cool to do so under the banner of woke culture.

I obviously don't know what your race is, but if you are a white person, go right ahead and become a cheerleader for BLM when you know they hate you just for being white, no matter how anti-racist your trackrecord consistently has been. Oh, and you don't get to claim any credentials for having an Asian or any other non-European ancestor with BLM, because Asians/Hispanics are now all of a sudden considered white too, and racist. In parting, I would encourage you to watch the following two video clips, if you can find the time:

Response to Repzilla's second video about Adora BatBrat: the Youtube Drama Community doesn't understand anything about the gothic subculture by ISaidWhatISaid in Gothic

[–]TheTasteOfEspionage 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

No, it was evident that Repzilla did not understand the goth subculture. His knowledge of Adora and her history seemed limited and he referred to Seraphim&Nahemah (which he made no effort to pronounce) as an influencer, when it is in fact a business. But the problem with his video was not that he "demonized long-accepted goth aesthetics", but that he simply did not seem to know what he was talking about. In fact, most true members of the goth subculture do not condone the use of offensive and/or triggering content for shock value; the sentiment they hold is to speak up for what they believe is right even when it is unpopular, not blind defiance of moral values set by those they deem to be "normal".

On Adora's Ask FM account, she has actually stated that she knows very little of who Emilie Autumn is, just that she doesn't believe she would like her music. This makes it very unlikely that she was referencing EA's work when she took that photo. Additionally, Autumn should not be used as a gold standard of our subcultural morality; she has been another recent controversy, with many of her goth and otherwise alternative fans calling her out for racist, sexist, and ableist attitudes. A similar argument can be made for Axl Rose - many people already find him to be problematic (and generally not a good person) as well. There's a large difference between a shirt claiming to be black (worn by a white woman) and a shirt asking to marry young, so I'm not entirely sure as to why the Sisters of Mercy were brought up in this conversation.

There is nothing wrong with believing that Black lives matter - they do - and that's what the BLM movement stands for. They understand that white lives, brown lives, and any other lives matter as well, but they are protesting the court judgements that suggest our legal system believes Black lives don't matter. There are no protests when white people are killed because the killer is charged fairly; if this were not the case there would be protests over that as well. Although many misunderstand BLM or disagree with the methods used to protest it, it is not an unreasonable ideology to openly support and those who understand it but find it to be stupid typically are racist. There are also so, so many people within the goth, punk, metal, etc. subcultures who strongly believe in BLM.

Unlike in America, Germany has torn down all statues commemorating advocates of genocide and fascism. Although Germans may have darker senses of humor, they understand that there is nothing humorous about what happened there in World War II and are committed to ensuring that history never repeats - they do this by directly opposing any notion that the Nazis are a group to be celebrated, even ones made in jest. It is true that Germans would see Adora's actions as a joke, but not innocent or funny.

As for the penis party? That was an absolute dumpster fire. It was definitely not illegal though, just cringey as hell. While these parties aren't particularly abnormal for 15-year-olds in Sweden, they certainly aren't thrown by the birthday kid's mom. All of that was just weird, whether you're goth or not.

No, I don't think Repzilla's video was brilliant, but I also do not believe that all of Adora's actions are acceptable. Being a part of an alternative subculture does not grant one an exception to political correctness, especially one that was pioneered by such progressive thinkers as Rozz Williams and Siouxsie Sioux.

When I was talking about closet goths in heavy metal, this is what I was referring to. A death metal frontsinger who's a Morrissey fan? Definitely a closet goth right there.

That said, I don't really like this cover of the single by The Cure but I do respect the fact that Behemoth (a band I otherwise do like) did something completely different from the original. I just think that when you cover gothic songs you should retain the rocksteady post-rock beat rather than doing something completely different rhythmically. The brooding atmosphere of many gothic music is very much based on the fact that the beat is rocksteady, it's like you're walking or running towards the inevitable.

Ya. A lot of what I'd posted I'd actually consider other things: pop, new wave, alternative, industrial, etc. But some of those terms don't hold up as well for a variety of reasons. Alternative was rarely heard on the radio, yet is now in the grocery store. U2 used to be an underground-ish band but is now a megaband. Also, there's no shortage of overlapping Venn diagrams of genres and styles.

Gothic, IMO, is less of a genre or even style and more of an attitude or cultivated mood.

I'd love a /s/ClassicalMusic. I want a /s/MedievalMusic even more for Baroque and Renaissance and of course some silly stuff.

Edit: Just made: /s/ClassicalMusic and I unmodded. I don't expect too much trouble there. We can always call for help. I'm not a moderator-of-people type. I like making banners and CSS for them and updating the info, but they don't all need to be fancy - though I would have liked to have had fun with that one. We could always ask M7 to become mods if needs be. Maybe I'll do the other next week and beautify it. And/or others...

Ya, I agree with your assessment of my pushing the extreme limits of the "gothic" label.

Hey, don't worry about it, I am definitely not a goth-purist or anything like that. Angela Benedict on Youtube pointed out that gothic parties in the 1990s were open to anyone who wasn't mainstream, so it was goths, metal heads, rivetheads, alt scenesters and freaky artsy fartsy types all mixing and mingling. Same with the music. It was never just post-rock or new wave or dark ambient.

I really wanted an /s/classical, I should register that one sometime...
