Can't sell stuff your ex latched onto. She ended up with the 20 ocean view acres on a hilltop, with redwoods and meadows. The last November I was there, a walk over to the woods by my office cabin, which became known as Sector 2, yielded a bit over 30 pounds of Chanterelles.

But if you did bug out, you'd almost 100% be guaranteed to end up in a place where it freezes, gets over 80F in the summer, or both. Might as well be living in HELL at that point. Have to admit, I'm a bit biased against living in places that suck. (because I've lived in them) 😎

We're trying to start an off-grid community from scratch on some War Of 1812 battlegrounds in Southwestern Ontario, where it freezes and can get hot in July/August. Between their lack of organization and resources plus some drama and baggage, I'm not sure I want to participate anymore. I already donated more than just 3 weeks this fall and I'm out for the winter, feeling resentful, and won't return in the spring unless things radically improve. I have my own projects and problems to solve and am not that desperate to flee. And there are other similar groups in overlapping circles too. I think I'll need to tour around and see the options before I commit anywhere, but first I'll need to finish setting up some projects this winter that may eventually make money hopefully. Plus I've seen many different kinds of communities in Toronto, Ottawa, New York, Austin, the Bay Area, Vancouver/Victoria, and more - all with pros and cons, so I already know many of the basic pitfalls to avoid even if I don't know much about nothin.

Sounds like a way to have an unpleasant few months. What is the glue they're claiming is so powerful that it would create a strong enough bond between all the participants?

You're probably not as misanthropic as I, but being around random morons in a living situation is about the worst thing I can imagine. (I've had housemates...)

Insightful question.

So far only 3 things:

  • Common awareness that tyranny is rising and we need alternatives and solutions.
  • A contract (yet to be read) between each person and the property owner and/or the cooperative "fellowship" (my preferred term over "community").
  • A half-year probation period. I think it should be a full year to see how we fair in all seasons. Plus some of us are family and some are complete strangers. There will be (already is) tribalist favouritism and drama too. More time is better than not. IMO we should have perpetual reassessments to perpetually help us all, and all who invest short or long term - fairly and compassionately (some are very old).

I think I'm pretty tolerant, but draw a hard line on some things. I don't like morons either, but I like teaching and helping. I also need some help. So far I've not gotten what I need so I'm pulling out for now - and to get shit done this winter. Today I'm wrapping up, tomorrow it begins.
