I think that it's incorrect to extrapolate this to questioning "settled science".
Criticism of the Lobotomy rose from the mid 40s. And those criticisms grew until the procedure was abandoned. (Although there are surgical interventions for severe epilepsy that involve separating or removing parts of the brain).
That there are medical procedures that are no longer considered usable, doesn't imply we need to continually revisit actual accepted science such as whether the earth orbits the sun or that the earth isn't flat.
