See, THIS is the kind of stuff I like to read.

Two thoughts :

  • There's no date I can see on this essay. Is this old as in around 2000 or is it more contemporary ?

  • I would love to see discussion about this essay and these ideas. The whole thing fits very well with the bazillion possible communities model of Saidit.

I can't find a date either.

If you want a discussion, the replies in this thread are it! I agree the ideas in the essay apply to saidit in very important ways. Saidit is still in the early growth phase, but some sociopaths have tried to move in here and there. I'm hoping we have a good enough business sense, combined with a good technological literacy, and a good understanding of social dynamics, that we can guide saidit to victory without being hijacked by sociopaths

feel like I understand a little better what's going on with groups after reading that. and my interactions with them. people trying to get in, people trying to keep them out, "selling out," people who seem faker but better.

don't think it captures everything, but it's a helpful read I think.

I think I've been more of a mop than I'd like to admit. Don't like it. Try not to be, but maybe that's kindof forcing myself to be interested in something I'm not because I like the people who are interested in the thing. Or I don't like the people who are interested in the things I do naturally like, they seem boring.

A lot of sub-cultures are hijacked, re-packaged and turned into products. Modern "hip hop" is a good example of this.

There is a feeling of regret embedded in this article.

The sociopaths have arrived. Their currency is propaganda.

Fluid mode seems improbable.

I didn't get regret. I got Meta Subculture instead. The guy has figured out a cool new thing and is sharing it with us, but this time it's not music film game or technology, it's subcultures.

I really like the way you said that, I think that's spot on.

This explains a lot. I like this article.

It actually makes me feel better. I see now my primary life is in a subculture with high barriers to entry, and that I'm a fanatic who supports creators. Neat. I was worried we were going to get flooded by mops (stupid word) and sociopaths, but after reading I'm pretty sure we got this covered. Good news.
