Did I mention that the biggest reason I stopped buying games, is because I don't want to give some piece of shit on the other side of the world the ability to disable my stuff after taking my money?

What was it that Gabe Newell said about piracy?

Now we're starting to see a return to service problems in gaming. Studios, driven by the demands of their shareholders to see each year's profit being measurably higher than the one before, are going to end up giving pirates just that many more reasons to keep doing what they do.

I'm finding myself more and more interested in site like GOG--I don't need the hassle of fucking around and finding out with less-than-legit means of acquisition--where lack of DRM is a strong selling point. I'm also glad that much of my personal gaming library is older stuff where nobody gives a shit about throwing in some dodgy DRM in a scheme to fuck people over for no reason.

Capcom is just going nuts with their attempts to shut down game modding. I can't tell if it's because they don't want to risk losing an avenue of monetization (ala Bethesda's oft-derided Creation Club) or something else.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of consumers won't care about stuff like this, which is exactly how things like MTX and live service games became normalized, and which is probably how we'll end up paying endless subscription fees to long-term rent every game we want to play.

Before enshitification and late-stage capitalism, games like Duke Nukem 3D came with programs to extract the game files and create custom maps and mods, right on the official CD! When you would quit the game, it would even inform you of this.

EDIT: Also, consolidation and acquisitions in the games industry will hasten the arrival of mandatory subscriptions for games... once the big players like Microsoft can make it into a "take it or leave it" affair, as is the case with so much in the tech sector today.

This is shitty, Valve shouldn't allow publishers to add DRM to games after the fact.
