Rumble ought to try making some hay from this.

YouTube has become so slow to load up videos on their bloated webpages. I rarely go to YouTube any more. And here, all we have to do is provide a direct link to an MP4 video and it can begin playing immediately.

They have a forced 5 second delay before anything actually loads to discourage page scraping

The slow page loading has been going on for many months, if not over a year. One annoying result I experienced was the video (or ad) began playing before the page finished loading, but none of the controls were visible, so I was unable to stop the video or prevent the audio from playing in the room. There is so many other things loading up on the page, like suggested videos that I rarely want to see.

Page scraping.... does that enable YouTube videos to be seen, many of which were uploaded freely by regular people who intended for their videos to be watched?

I just mute the ads. They can't make me listen or buy that spoon tapping ear bull shit. Come to think of it YouTube's ads are shit. Do real companies pay for that ad shit or is YouTube throwing shitty ads at you to force you to subscribe?

Do real companies pay for that ad shit or is YouTube throwing shitty ads at you to force you to subscribe?

Yes.

And while that's partially the obligatory joke response to such a question, it's also a serious answer. YT desperately wants to collect from both advertisers--to the extent that they'll happily show ads for outright scams, as long as someone pays to show them--and get subscribers hooked in to a monthly service fee.

I'm cynical enough to believe that YT will at some point being a careful rollout of ads--all under the guise of being super curated to appeal specifically to the carefully gathered data of each user--on the paid service as well, because the corporate greed absolutely will not allow them to just let that many people go untapped for every last possible dollar and cent.

From the article:

Update

A YouTube spokesperson has confirmed that the YouTube slowdowns on Firefox are related to its anti-ad-blocker efforts.

"To support a diverse ecosystem of creators globally and allow billions to access their favorite content on YouTube, we’ve launched an effort to urge viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad free experience," the company said in an email to Android Central. "Users who have ad blockers installed may experience suboptimal viewing, regardless of the browser they are using."

"To support a diverse ecosystem of creators globally"? Pretty much every channel I like is demonitized, ad restricted, or what have you. Motherfuckers, YOU don't support creators, don't put that shit on me.

The other side of YT's greed, making sure that only the opinions that Google's leadership approves of get to share the crumbs from their table.
