I recommend Newpipe over this. It's free, open source, and available on F-Droid.

No homepage recommendations though, hard pass tbh, I love vanced.

Does it also give YouTube premium? Vanced gives you background play and listening to audio with the screen locked.

I use both. Newpipe does offer both, as well as supporting video downloads or even turning them into mp3's for your leisure!

Yes, but its missing the ability to sign in or have a recommendations page based on anything besides subscriptions.

You essentially lose the smartness of the algorithm if you use newpipe, although newpipe is actually better at blocking ads.

Would recommend! You're watching YouTube without supporting Google (hooray for no ads) plus you get background play so that when you're playing a video and lock your phone, the audio continues to play. Pretty useful!

Yeah I love being able to put some classical music on quietly in the background when I read but I don't want to download a bunch of it because I only listen to classical when I'm cooking or reading so it's nice to be able to put some on and not have my music, as well as my focus reading, interrupted every 30 seconds by another 2 min advertisement I have to skip.

Youtube vanced kids (a vanced version of YouTube music) is also great.
