The speed is slow. I stopped using DVD's in favor of flashdrives years ago. Also, the small size of a flashdrive versus having to have a CD/DVD case to avoid scratches is another factor.

I'm sure there are pros and cons, but this is just "my" reason I don't use optical media any more. If people still use CD's and DVD's, they have their reason to use them, which makes sense for them. For me, it's all about speed and portability.

bluray was good for a while. 60Gb on a disk was ok until flash drives dropped in price

I see.

Optical media is more about reliability and archival, see here

Depending on the quality of the disc, where the dye can degrade over time.

I still have a bunch of old CD-R's from the late 90's, which I have to go through all of them. :P

I still miss my collection of thousands of CDs, some rare.

Also CDs etc can be bleached and ruined forever if left in the sun, ie on a window ledge - especially burnable discs.

What happened to those CDs?

My epic collection would have made for an interesting episode of storage wars. At the time I was powerless to do anything about it due to a tedious and tragic series of unfortunate events. I've since torrented more than enough to replace them but I miss the hard copies and album covers you could hold in your hands - as well as all my DJ notes and especially the rare and irreplaceable ones.
