I have an alternative theory.
Nobody who lives a normal life was happy to spend $3,000 on a bag, so the only bags that sold were selling to the stupid, and the stupid and rich. In order to turn a greater profit, they up the price of the bag phenomenally. Yes, you price out those people who aren't rich, and maybe lose a few stupid rich people, but if that's 30% of your customers, but your price has risen by 3 times, you still make more money.
