That's a pretty big stretch... Not saying Microsoft is not one of the most evil companies ever. Just that I don't see them as trying to hide it.

Also the swastika has been used long before the Nazis and was not a symbol of evil or hatred back then.

As for windows, sadly I think I'm stuck with windows 10 for my business. Our POS machines both run windows as well we have a special photo printer from HP that doesn't support Linux. I can get the printer to work but it will only do basic printing which defeats the purpose.

When win 10 support ends I will make another attempt to go all Linux Mint. Although the POS terminals will have to remain windows, they are stand alones and do not require network access to operate so I don't see an issue there.

Also I've never been able to get a proper Linux network share going either...can you recommend any good tutorials?

After the collapse of Nazi Germany, where did all the Nazi's run off to?

I also use Linux Mint, but am not knowledgeable about creating networks with them.

That depends what server software you are using.

Right now the company is using Windows file sharing. I have a dedicated NAS drive (Named NAS) with two folders available over the network. (Public NAS and Company) Permissions are set accordingly for specific users with "Everyone" having access to the Public folder and only two users with access to Company.

The only other issues is I have written a java program that basically runs all automated operations and handles all client accounts. It's custom tailored to my business and is critical for day to day. This program is stored on the NAS drive and can be run from any computer with access to the network. (Example being, if I'm in the office and I need an invoice floor client X I can open the application and it's right there. If I happen to be in the shop it's the same thing, open the app and the info is there.)

I would need some way of replicating this though Linux. I was looking at using Simba but TBO I never really gave it a fair shot. Windows 10 has been working perfect but now that support is ending I will have to make a serious effort.

Since you are familiar with java it would be not too difficult to write a networking control program using processing.org platform and libraries, and being java based it should be not too hard to merge with your control program. Sorry I'm only familiar with java using the processing IDE and using it for GUI and connecting to microcontrollers. It works on windows, linux, ARM single board puters (PI), and android (hard to work on).

processing networking library. Check out the carnivore library (mentioned here also) for packet sniffing and real-time traffic monitoring. https://processing.org/tutorials/network

A quick search shows controlling a printer from processing requires importing Java Print Service API javax.print .

The last comment here shows an example of this on processing.

Thanks for the info. I'll be looking into it.

It's possible to get Win 11 installed on an older machine. I installed Win 11 on an 8 year old laptop.

Do a search for installing 11 on a machine that bypasses the hardware check.

Wanting windoze 11 (or 10 for that matter) on your machine is like saying "please, I love a dick up my ass".

I don't like windows either but sometimes I have to use it for some software to work.

Which is why I dual boot Windows and Linux. I use Linux 90% of the time.

I need Linux to get free software to work.

Have you tried using Wine to run Windows programs on Linux?

Yes, and I also do virtual machines. Sometimes one works better than the other depending on what it is. Also, workplaces that force you to use windoze suck. They're a big reason why micro$oft is the giant POS overlord they are today.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have read about the reg hack that will allow this but I'm not really interested in continuing with Microsoft.

I would like to move everything for my business to Linux based. If I can solve my network issues (TBH I haven't really given it a hard try) the only other problem is the photo printer which I could probably do a work around if I put some though into it. (Even if I have to run a Virtual Desktop running windows though Linux, this printer is only needed occasionally for promotional material.)

I moved away from MS Office about 8 years ago to LibreOffice and have never regretted it. the learning curve was minimal and I expect the same will happen with a Linux based system.

unfortunately the shoddy masters product came with the systems and Unix took decades to reach a decent convenience factor
