Bertolt Brecht - theatre maker

He believed using emotion in theater and film to manipulate people into political action was wrong and worked against people's own interests the majority of the time. He tried to create drama which kept people thinking about issues rationally, usually by introducing unrealistic elements such would remind people they are watching fiction such as plain sets, breaking the fourth wall, narration and people randomly breaking into song or dance.

It's funny to read the theory as a British person because he was basically a German Communist who reinvented panto and got called a genius for it.

Of course he failed and didn't convert anyone to communism but at least Mack the Knife is a good song.
