One of the interesting things I've learnt recently was McCarthy was not completely unjustified.

Hollywood writers were indeed trying to convert people to communism via movie scripts and had been since the 1920s. They just weren't very good at it.

This tactic was actual completely against the ideals of the western left at the time (see Brecht) so they really knew they weren't acting morally. As with many people working against their counties during the cold war it was more about feeling superior, ego and dupers delight than actually liking or caring about communism or the poor.

I'm suspecting you mean "countries" and whether or not you did, that's an excellent insight. Dupers delight is Buttigieg's resting state, and I'm sure there's video out there of AOC duping delightedly.

Also, Brecht who? would like to look up more.

Bertolt Brecht - theatre maker

He believed using emotion in theater and film to manipulate people into political action was wrong and worked against people's own interests the majority of the time. He tried to create drama which kept people thinking about issues rationally, usually by introducing unrealistic elements such would remind people they are watching fiction such as plain sets, breaking the fourth wall, narration and people randomly breaking into song or dance.

It's funny to read the theory as a British person because he was basically a German Communist who reinvented panto and got called a genius for it.

Of course he failed and didn't convert anyone to communism but at least Mack the Knife is a good song.
