You can look at the number of deaths and compare it to the numbers a typical year, i.e. deaths caused by e.g. the flu. Way more people are dying this year than during a flu season, and this despite extreme measures keeping the infection rate relatively low compared to what it would be if it was allowed to spread as freely as the flu.

There are more people on Earth this year than last year, the (non-white) population is growing, so of course there are more dead. Flu numbers fluctuate too.
