My favorite memories of playing Mario games are being forced to read dialogue about characters being bullied by their family members.

The article is the epitome of journalism as well.

However, as noted by YouTuber ShortFatOtaku

Riveting source.

the original Japanese version of the game describes the character as an otokonoko or a femboy,

Elementary Japanese mistake so rediculous it basically calls into question anything this person says.

Otokonoko. 男の子

男 man 子child

Proper translation "Boy".

Like go look it up in any dictionary.

Anyway I've known about this for awhile as the trans elements on Nintendo sides of the internet would never shut up about it. Basically, it looks like this character was referred to as a boy in Japanese version, and was changed to be a girl in international version likely because Nintendo didn't want to cause friction with the US market. Or perhaps they figured it was just easier to not bother with the "joke" that the cute feminine looking creature thing is actually a boy the whole time since Japanese is naturally vague with pronouns where English is not.

Can't find textual evidence the character is trans though. Just loads of internet types screaming about it. Might have changed that in the rerelease as it seems the script got a rewrite but it looks to me so far that they've written it slyly enough that it's not outright. Probably to try to avoid a daily wire piece.

Nintendo has been typically pretty good at trying to stay out of this sort of thing but you've seen I creep in a little bit with their recent titles trying to avoid gendered terminology and the like on character select screens.

Gone are the old pokemon (are you a boy or a girl) and replaced with a more neutral (choose your character) type prompt for example.

What an excellent comment, I wish I could vote twice!

It does also go some way to showing how painfully Western (American, really) the trans stuff is, that people are whipped up by such a linguistic choice.

It's written in (mostly) katakana in JP (オトコのコ); part of the joke is its other reading of 男の娘, or "male girl" (ie. femboy). So basically he's a very effeminate man.

Idk about trying to directly translate the meaning of Japanese words but I've seen enough anime to know how they treat the whole gender thing. In the past those types of characters would way more easily be considered a "trap" in the English context. At this point though I'm not even sure if TRAs have deemed "trap" to be phobic or not. Usually the character would be dressed as the opposite sex but not particularly trying to pretend that they were.

I hadn't even thought about the idea that the character was transified for a western audience but it makes sense and they are doing it to existing characters. In Cowboy Bebop there's a male character who basically had human chemical experiments done to him while in prison and developed breasts due to the drugs he was given to calm him down. By the time the live action came out people were just outright claiming the character to be "nonbinary" as if it were a fact.

Then in like Naruto which is more a kids show they have Haku who fully dresses in female clothing and lets people think he's a girl then waits till the end and goes "by the way I'm a boy" just seemingly to get the reaction... That sounds like a trap if ever I've seen one lol ..

It is a bad article, but it's also the best I could find. It's one of the very few that wasn't praising the trans retcon.

It still doesn't work because trans characters in Mario are old hat. I mean, Birdo's been a trans woman in Mario games all the way back to SMB 2, a game made long before most people knew about transgender people in the first place; and ever since then "Birdo is a trans woman and Yoshi's girlfriend" has gone without saying in subsequent appearances. If it happens in newer games again, who cares?

I'm pretty sure that was a translation error in the instruction manual to Super Mario Bros 2. The instruction manuals for the early Mario games had a lot of translation errors.

Regardless, Birdo is a lizard-thing. Reptiles and amphibians sometimes have unusual sex stuff like hermaphrodites, actual sex-changing, and parthenogenesis. Remember the dinosaurs that changed their sex in Jurassic Park? But what people need to remember is that humans are not reptiles/amphibians. We're mammals and mammals can't change their sex.

I don't think it's a translation error, since in subsequent appearances they made it clear "yes, Birdo is a trans woman and has been". If it was a translation error, it would have been forgotten about.

Even if it's a lizard-thing, it is the same point. There's been trans characters in Mario since SMB2, so getting shook about this character just boils down to "trans people exist and that rustles my jimmies".

Hard to say. I think Birdo was depicted in a way that was stereotypical of Japanese cross dressing comedians in some old game commercial, but I don't think I can ever recall seeing in in game. Yoshi and Birdo being lovers just sounds like some internet bullshit to me.

I would agree if it wasn't literally flat-out said: One of the Mario Kart games described Birdo as "Yoshi's girlfriend, but really his...boyfriend?", which is what connected the "Birdo wasn't a translation error in SMB2, Birdo actually is a trans woman" as well.

I can't recall ever seeing anything like that.

I'm pretty sure it was the Mario Kart arcade game saying it.

Japan seems to have really bought into the trans thing. I was browsing the r/japan sub where they were celebrating Irreversible Damage being blacklisted by publishers.

Japan seems to have really bought into the trans thing.

Not really a surprise though. Futa is a staple of hentai, right alongside tentacles, NTR (cucking), and chomo fuel.

Nah /r/Japan is like 0% Japanese. It's all westerners. Why would Japanese people use English reddit?
