Way back in the day nobody called themselves that. Asexual was term used in biology referring to self-reproducing organisms. If you needed to communicate your lack of sexual desire you'd simply say you had no/low libido; you didn't need a special name for yourself.

But now? God knows why but we are inundated with people absolutely consumed with identity and labels. "Oh I'm quasi-panaromantic but only on Tuesdays and every other day I'm demixenosexual and here's my special flag please respect my pronouns" and holy shit if there was ever a group of people that needed regular bitch-slapping it's these obnoxious motherfuckers.

And “gender” was just the polite term for “sex.”

Gee, our old LaSalle ran great…

And trannies were a rare breed who had an actual clinical illness, and were not conflated with transvestites who were much more like the vast majority of trannies are now.

I would say the majority of 'trans' people I encounter are the 'non-binary' flavour who just want to feel special about being unappealing.

That's still sort of an offshoot of transvestism. It's an "identity" thing. Transsexual disorder isn't even remotely similar.
