Because nothing says “fighting toxicity” more than being constantly monitored and controlled by tech giants…

Also, I find it funny how Ubisoft and Riot are doing this while they’re both dealing with sexual harassment accusations

That's almost certainly why they're doing it, they're looking for something to take the heat off of the people around the accused, and nothing says "I'm one of the good ones, honest" like a performative, do-nothing display of content policing.

like all those snotty RoosterTeeth Tweets about how "if you don't like our sassy new approach to racism/sexism, we don't need you watching our videos" while their execs were running rampant among their animators for years

They can make games where people act out killing other players, but then they are concerned about the statement:

I am going to take you out...

What do they really want to censor? Obviously, the truth is the main target. As for me, I will boycott their games and not fund their business.

The want to treat their customers like children (because they are definitely not selling their adult products to children) because a small faction amongst their customers wants to be treated like children because they miss Mummy looking over their shoulder and protecting them from the big, nasty world and another small portion of their customer base struggles with reality and find being reminded of that hurts their fee-fees.

The dystopian authoritarian hellscape will be brought about by people demanding their feelings be protected from naughty words.

I feel this. I was just browsing the subreddit for my hometown. One particular thread is full of deleted comments and some of the posters are posting things like "Hey, thanks for keeping us civil!"

Sad and pathetic.

They treat their customers like children because the want to normalise the masses acting like children. Children are more obedient, more naive and less likely to think outside the box.

There is certainly some of that, but there are a lot of people who grew up with helicopter parents who do not want to be treated as adults. They’re the ones who talk about feeling safe and complain that they feel unsafe when people disagree with them. Jonathan Haidt has talked a lot about these people, well worth checking out some of his lectures on YouTube or his book “The Coddling of the American Mind”. It’s a fascinating look at how an entire generation has been ruined by poor parenting and how those people may go on to damage society.

Helicopter parents are worse than neglectful parents. Helicopter parents raiae dependent, anxious and entitled children. Boomers started this shit and now look what has happened.

Lots of people who game too much and have the free time to get offended and go complain about some rando troll in the game chat calling them a FAGGOT instead of just either laughing at the retarded troll, trolling back, or turning it off/muting them, are your socially awkward pathetic wimpy nerd types that cry when they spill their milk. They also spend an inordinate amount of money on this shit so they are the whales (literally in many cases) that need to be kept happy to keep the money flowing.

They want to censor the trolls so you don't get some whiny baby going on twitter and starting a shit storm mob attack that comes round go effect your sales. There are loads of adult babies in gaming that will find something to get offended over be that characterizations that they feel are not progressive or weebs mad that the company hired professional writers that don't do a 1 for 1 translation like their shitty fan subs and they don't do paragraphs of footnotes you need to pause to read because they can't think to use a thesaurus or a dictionary.

Good night to those Jewish people living in Japan.

Oops, if Minecraft's attempt at this was any indication, that simple sentence would get me turbo-banned and likely arrested for harassment or slurs.

I don't give a shit what these clowns do. No one even talks in built in game chat anymore. On the flip side though Riot games makes league of legends a game notorious for its salty and shitty player base. While Ubisoft makes... uh well i mean they had assassins creed which is okay.. and uh their wannabe gta simulators. Their shitty attempt at open world rpgs with farcry. You know what i could never buy another product from either company again and be jut fucking fine in life.

open world rpgs with farcry.

Really, you consider those to be RPGs? I'm pretty sure they're just shooters with a thin veneer of skill development slapped on to give you a reason to periodically check something other than a map or inventory screen.

wannabe gta simulators.

Watch_Dogs, right? Because I can't think anything else that could qualify.

Yeah, there’s nothing dystopian about building a vast AI Censorbot and turning it loose in your game.

It’s not like building a censorship AI for voice comms couldn’t be used for things other than gaming. I fully expect to find out that China and Iran are funding this “research”.

Well yea. It's right there in plain sight, "Riot Games". They are a Chinese company, and therefore, the CCP is directly in charge.

I'm such a cynical fucker by this point that I fully expect that they're actually testing and fine-tuning these things on gaming before they sell them on to the real intended users.

If you see something in a group chat that you don't like, here's an obvious solution: leave. If you can't take the heat, don't step into the kitchen. Why is that so hard for people to understand? Oh right, it's not about feelings. It's all about control. Makes sense.

[–]ClassroomPast6178 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

The same is true of everything. But people seem to have this idea that they have a right to not be offended, and that that right supersedes everyone else’s right to speak freely. They’re enabling the tyrants CS Lewis warned about.

[–]RedEyedWarriorThe Evil Cishomo 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

People who think they have a right to not be offended are among the biggest spoiled brats on the planet. They need to be publicly shamed until they cop onto themselves.
