A few months back, before the Great Cloudflare Debacle, there was a thread where a number of us were doing our usual grumbling about the spammers. Magnora conceded that a few of us might be entrusted to put spammers on the naughty list now that Vulptex has headed for the hills. @magnora7 - any update on this? Are you still up for allowing it?

This is exactly how the reddit takeover went down.

It's a risk for sure. Not sure how you mitigate something like that without extra tools or appealing to the top.

The boss needs to supervise the moderators. Axe the moderators for any funny business like censorship of non-commercial posts or posters.

Here's my thoughts on a fully automated strategy that should work to reduce spam:

  1. Don't allow accounts with low karma to create posts. Only commenting is allowed.

  2. Comments have to be upvoted to a threshold to allow posting. This forces users to engage in conversation in a non-trollish or bot-like fashion. Only accounts already allowed to post can upvote comments to prevent bots from upvoting themselves. AI can defeat this but will work for the current spam bots we see.

  3. Posters whose posts get tagged as spam above a certain threshold will be temporarily banned from posting. Perhaps a week or two. You are notified of this temporary ban so you can correct your behavior. Only other accounts allowed to post can flag other's posts as spam to prevent bot accounts flagging everything.

  4. Three strikes and you're out. If your account gets temporarily banned 3 times then it gets permanently shadow banned with no notification. Account still seems active but your posts are hidden from all subs. Shadow banning adds a further difficulty in a bot detecting when it has been banned.

This strategy is completely automated and does not rely on mods or power users, which as we've seen, those privileges always get abused. The thresholds are levers that can be adjusted to find a good balance. Like as the site traffic increases we would probably want to increase the spam flag ban threshold, since posts would naturally get flagged more with more users.

I do think the idea has merit, but it would need to be done with transparency and strict accountability for people who abuse their "spam cop" role.

Believe it or not, some of us prayed to the Lord for help removing the Cloudflare blockade, and it's now gone. I appreciate that you admit to your ignorance. I am also ignorant about many things. It is good for us to be humble.

Well in case some post which is obviously not spam was upvoted as spam, users which upvoted it should lose spam-voting privileges, also there should be a high karma minimum to prevent easy brigading by new accounts.

I asked about something like this a year or so ago, and the reply from Vulptex was that the site has those sorts of tools, but mag7 is loathe to turn them on, let alone allow new patches to be uploaded.

There's report and block already. I dunno how often admins look at the reports but if I were an admin that would be the first place I'd look to clean up spam.

I’d be willing to moderate. I’d axe any post promoting a product or service. If the user’s first post was commercial spam, I’d axe the user too. Anything else I’d ignore, including so called “shit posts.”

Let the commercial posters spend $$ to advertise on Joogle or Nosebook.

A simple fix is to make posts by accounts with zero "karma" hidden until approved. The problem is that shills will very actively attack that strategy with accusations of censorship. Every day the front page will be filled with posts about it.

A couple of the default subs do that. It does really piss off people who happen to notice their post isn't showing up -- and frankly it's easy for a mod to not notice unless it's mentioned.
