That's a very interesting observation about dating apps.

Nothing is left to human connection and discovering common needs, wants, and interests when finding partners that way... It's a pass/fail scenario like a job advertisement with a rubric of expectations. Gross.

We used to be able to chat on the bus or the coffee shop or wherever. ("Hey, I read that same book... isn't it great?") There's no expectation of a relationship, but who knows, it's a connection. And nowadays? Earpods, phone screens, and stay-at-home lockdowns. Wow—I really think we're done for.

You can't ever get to actually know people by the things they put on their profile. When's the last time any of them actually went for a "long walk on the beach"... it's either aspirational, or it's lies.

The problem is that as a woman, if you were to talk to a man on a bus about the book they're reading, if they're straight, they'll think it's an invitation for sex or a romantic relationship. Showing any kind of pleasantry towards them, even politeness, is seen as a 'signal', at least in my experience.

That's only going to get worse the more people are starved for ordinary human connections, I think. Talking on the bus becomes a porn fantasy, basically.

Everyone's self absorbed, then add to that how men are deluded by porn, and I can't see how it gets better from here.

As a guy I assume anyone talking to me(male or female) wants something, and it's not a relationship, it's money, or a signature on a petition, or to join their church/cult/whatever.
