Reminds me of mom... she likely doesn't know much about the insidious TRAs. Hell, up until a few years ago, I didn't know much either, and I'm a "LGB" member. I had no idea hetero people were "transitioning" and identifying as gay. Didn't know men were joining women's sports. I saw a pic of a 40/50+ year old white man on a college basketball women's team and honestly thought "this is just white male privilege", didn't really link it to trans folks since the trans folks I know are black, and the older ones wouldn't join a college team.

Atwood is only four years older than Janice Raymond, author of the 1979 feminist book about males who claim to be women, The Transsexual Empire. Raymond's book was very widely reviewed - and very well received - in the mainstream press. The NY Times gave it a rave review.

Transsexualism amongst males was a very big topic in popular culture in the West in the 1960s and 70s. James Jan Morris had a huge international bestseller with his account of his "transsexualism" in 1974. Richard Raskin Renee Richards sued for the right to compete in US women's professional tennis in 1976; he won his case in 1977, and his story made international headlines. As a woman of letters and a keen observer of social trends, Atwood had to be aware of this.

I am probably your mom's age or even older. If your mom is heterosexual, or a bisexual woman, who has had her fair share of sexual relationships over the course of her life, or she knows and speaks frankly with female friends and relatives about their sexual experiences and relationships, I am pretty positive that she has met or knows of at least one het relationship in which the male partner is an AGP cross-dresser who in today's climate would be calling himself "trans" and saying he's a real woman and always has been.

This is not new behavior on the part of males. Both het and homosexual males who want to be women and who call themselves women have been around since at least the 1950s; earlier if we look at the historical record. What's changed now is how public, emboldened and powerful these men have become. The other thing that has changed is how many other people of both sexes are jumping on the trans bandwagon, and developing "gender dysphoria" - or at least labelling the unhappiness and mental distress they experience as "gender dysphoria."

No, we're black... heterosexual black men (at least not black husbands) don't crossdress where we're from.

Your mom's never had any female friends of any other races? None of your extended family has ever had a sexual relationship with a person of another race?

I have no idea where you're from, but it makes me curious whether heterosexual male cross-dressing really never occurs there, or it's done on the way DL or it's called something else.

But the issue of whether certain paraphilias might be specific to, or more common among, males of particular races and cultural milieus is interesting.

Holy shit that article is absurd, but it seems like the author is a little skeptical, at least (I see it is from like 9 years ago, so that helps). I wonder if that POS TiM ever hurt any of the legit female athletes… wouldn't surprise me. And the naked sauna guy… just sick. 6 year old girls don't need to see stranger's male genitalia, and neither do grown-ass women need that shit. Ugh.
