I think of the Sampoong department store collapse. Shoddy construction, top heavy and arrogant management and boom, gone in a matter of seconds.

And over 500 people killed underneath that building.

Yes. It was a completely avoidable tragedy, had the building owner just closed the mall when they saw the floor separating from the pillar on the 5th floor. Those poor people died of his short-sighted greed.

I saw the Seconds From Disaster documentary about that. At one point the narrator said "It was never a case of IF but WHEN the building collapsed." With a lot of stuff happening at the moment I think it's a case of "when not if" things come out and consequences happen. With all the hard work done by so many here and elsewhere that "when" will be a lot sooner and fewer people hurt.

Oh, that is such a good show. I have a morbid fascination with catastrophic structural failures, why they happened and how they were accounted for going forward in design and engineering. The TRA worldview and stranglehold on culture is built on the flimsiest of pretenses, little more than delusion and faith. Spread facts and try to keep as many people from getting hurt as possible, I agree.
