I'm not a hammie but I have considered learning about radio. I am more interested is software defined radio, I think it has a lot more possibilities. For a bit I had a trucker CB radio but never got around to tuning it, so my reception was shit compared to others and I just couldn't get motivated to put work into it.

I always thought CB needs to get into the digital age. Has HAM finally gone digital? Is there anything innovative happening?

I think there is some newer digital stuff with the HAM but I can't remember much about it. Some older radio heads were complaining about it taking over and polluting the airwaves, but it sounded interesting to me and kinda revolutionary.

However, in the US it can't be encrypted or it's illegal, and would probably get shut down pretty quick. Would be interested to know how to do that though if SHTF

Pretty fucked up that it can't be encrypted. Sounds like a violation of the 4th amendment given that the only reason for that law is to allow unreasonable search.

You can't even own encrypted walkie talkies in the US.

Yeah I think that's the same rule from the FCC

Old guys don't want to become obsolete. Digital will allow for a lot better use of the spectrum.
