My first order of Japanese rice. I'm very happy with it so far. I have never seen it for sale before. Japan is not a big exporter of rice. They actually import more rice (especially from Thailand) than they export. In 2021, they sold only about $6 million worth of rice to the United States.

The Purple Plum radish almost went extinct in my garden. I planted my last seeds in the spring, which were over 10 years old. Only a couple plants grew well of this variety. Then a hail storm did some damage, but I managed to save a small amount of seed.

"Seedless" Watermelon, Second Generation ~ Last year we bought a watermelon from the store and I found one seed inside, planted it in the spring, and from the homegrown fruit, I saved about 64 seeds. It was small, but tasted sweet and refreshing.

Corn damaged by hail failed to grow a full ear.... from my small garden in Arkansas, 3 weeks after the worst hail storm I have ever witnessed. Stalks fell down and leaves were shredded. Farmers also see hail damage. I expect food shortages soon (but trust the Lord to provide, as he always has).

My garden has puddles of water from so much rain (in Arkansas). If my beds were not raised, the plants would be dying. Plants do not grow well in floods. Planting is delayed this year by rain and cold. The summer will be hot and dry, delaying harvest. Prepare for food shortages.

First radish of 2023 picked from my garden ~ I chopped up the greens and the globe and fried it into my rice at lunch time. Frying seemed to tame the flavor and make it more mild. (I liked it!) One of the cats helped me eat some of the raw greens!
