Do people who "ironically" vote "fun" on news stories understand that they are pushing posts higher on front page & s/all, what do you think?

Voting "fun" adds 1 to score, which is used for "hot" sorting algorithm.

I assumed other people realize there is no such thing as insightful or fun, only 2 points and 1 point. People either get 3 points from me or none. But they probably don't realize this, and as usual magnora7 is to blame for creating a very stupid system that makes no fucking sense to separately track 'insightful' and 'funny' when funny * 2 = insightful. There is no basis for conceptually different categories when they reduce to a single category of 'points' under the hood
This is really just doubleplus good, good, or both good and doubleplus good, which would really be more accurate names for the votey buttons. A ticker with +1, +2, or +3 points would be a much more transparent system, as that is essentially what you are doing, but even then, there is no incentive to give a post +1 or +2 if you want to move it up the hot list as ultimately voting means move it up or not, only the highest +3, or none make any rational sense, so there should only be a single + upvote button in this system

Good point! So some of those "fun" votes on serious articles could be from people with your voting strategy and not "ironic" votes ( "I'm laughing at the retarded shit you wrote" (c) Drewski)
Personally I can't make myself vote "fun" on serious/unfunny articles, I do vote "insightful"+"fun" on funny links I really liked though.

Whether or not they realize what they're doing, some people use it like a downvote. I guess it's like "I'm laughing at the retarded shit you wrote" or something.

HongKongPhooey made a good point that some people could always vote both "insightful"+"fun" as super-upvote of sorts.
