Do people who "ironically" vote "fun" on news stories understand that they are pushing posts higher on front page & s/all, what do you think?

People either get 3 points from me or none.
Good point! So some of those "fun" votes on serious articles could be from people with your voting strategy and not "ironic" votes ( "I'm laughing at the retarded shit you wrote" (c) Drewski)
Personally I can't make myself vote "fun" on serious/unfunny articles, I do vote "insightful"+"fun" on funny links I really liked though.
