The soft power of Cloudflare... if those sites use Disqus they will be allowed to operate freely... if they don't use Disqus and allow unrestricted comments, they will be removed from the general internet and have their DNS records and SSL certificates revoked. After they get to a certain size and notoriety.

Saidit started getting massively DDOSed every single day as soon as we reached above rank 200,000 or so on alexa.com site ranking

[–]binaryblob 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

Shouldn't Saidit be hosted on I2P then with the clients working with local caches to keep the latency down?

DDOS defence is expensive. Hosting on I2P can be done by every schmuck.

[–]magnora7 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (3 children)

We already have free anti-DDOS

[–]binaryblob 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

If it depends on an external company, it's not free. It just might not have a monetary cost.

Running in-house anti-DDOS is not possible unless you have at least $100k+ in servers and a very expensive internet connection

[–]binaryblob 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

On the web, but on I2P you can do that.

You don't have visibility there.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a web-presence too for marketing purposes, but the web-presence should at most be something that could be given up at a moment's notice, because it can be taken away by any government whenever they want.

The rules on saidit say they abide by US rules, which means that long term this can't ever remain a place for free speech.

F-droid is censoring apps that allow free speech and even encourages hardcoded IP blocks.

Also pragmatism. People who run news sites, especially the smaller ones, don't want to deal with implementing or moderating comments. So "off-shoring" it to a service like Disqus saves them a ton of time and money.

really? Doesn't 4chan allow pretty much everything and is still up and even easy to see on search engines?

Everything posted to 4chan is pre-filtered, analyzed heavily, and logged forever. It isn't the wild west anymore. They also delete comments and ban users all the time. Like Disqus.

Sites like 4chan are also a great candidate for implementing parts of the 'dead internet theory'. How do you know you aren't shouting into a void of bots reposting the things that other users posted while they were shouting into their own void of bots?

do you even use the site? I dunno, maybe it depends on the board, but the ones I'm using let you see pretty much everything and I didn't notice many bans (mostly using /ic/).

Also that's a pretty big claim, do you have anything to back it up?

since I'm mostly using /ic/ it's pretty easy to tell. that board is rather slow and because it's all about artworks you can tell there's actual people with paper and graphics tablets behind those posts. Maybe /pol/ and /b/ are bot infested revenants, but I rarely use those.

You are stuck in Plato's cave. It's a minimal amount of effort to do these things for a massive payoff. It was done a long time ago. Every sizeable website does it. They can pick from hundreds of off-the-shelf software packages to do it for them, or they can do it with the standard tools from any Cloud Provider, or they could write the code themselves. Your lack of understanding does not limit them.

Not even getting into what they do on their backend, how about all the ad trackers that load by default when you browse 4chan?

[–]Kuasocto 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

Again, anything at all to backup what you say? Some way to check... literally a single thing you said? I know that server side stuff is only known to the owners, but you say so much about so many things like its obvious knowledge... so it should have obvious proof.

Why are you sucking an idealized form of 4chans dick so hard? Is it supposed to be your magic playground where nobody knows what happens?

[–]Kuasocto 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

I just want any sources at all man. I can also make claims about anything in the world without anything to back them up. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying you've shown literally zero links.

[–]fatman 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

You don't have to believe it, now get back to posting about your centaur wife!

[–]Kuasocto 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I never understand why people get super defensive about not giving any links. It's as easy as saying "I don't care/can't be bothered, look up [X] yourself". But instead there's always this "why are you so negative, what's your problem" or more posts saying stuff without any link in sight.
