Washington wants to ensure that Novatek’s Arctic LNG 2 project is “dead in the water,” the State Department has said

The US is aiming to halt the development of the Russian energy sector, including a major new LNG project in the Arctic, senior State Department official Geoffrey Pyatt has said.

Speaking at a Financial Times summit on Monday, Pyatt stated that the US is specifically targeting the Arctic LNG 2 project in Russia’s northern Yamal Region, which is being developed by private energy giant Novatek.

“Our goal is to ensure that Arctic LNG 2 is dead in the water,” Pyatt, who serves as assistant secretary of state for energy resources, was quoted as saying by the British newspaper. “We’re very focused on ensuring that Russia is not able to develop new projects in order to [redirect] the gas that it had previously sent into Europe.”

The US has imposed several rounds of economic restrictions on Arctic LNG 2, the most recent of which was announced in November 2023.

Cutting Europe off from cheap Russian pipeline gas has been a key component of Western retaliation since Moscow launched its military operation in Ukraine in 2022. While American LNG producers have seized a large share of the market, Russian gas continues to flow to some EU member states.

According to a Reuters estimate, the EU boosted purchases of Russian LNG in 2023 to compensate for the loss of pipeline gas. LNG currently holds a 15% share of the market, up from roughly 8% before 2022. The share of the Russian pipeline gas was previously 37%. ( bold mine )

Brutal, chaotic war – norms, conventions and laws of conduct are being erased by chakokat in WayOfTheBern

Trita Parsi places Israel’s objective in attacking the Iranian Consulate in Damascus in a different context:

“An important aspect of Israel’s conduct – and Biden’s acquiescence to it – is that Israel is engaged in a deliberate and systematic effort to destroy existing laws and norms around warfare.

Even during wartime, embassies are off-limits [yet] Israel just bombed an Iranian diplomatic compound in Damascus.

Bombing hospitals is a war crime, [yet] Israel has bombed EVERY hospital in Gaza. It has even assassinated doctors and patients inside hospitals.

The ICJ obligated Israel to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Israel actively prevents aid from coming in.

Starvation of civilians as a method of warfare is prohibited under international humanitarian law. Israel has deliberately created a famine in Gaza.

Indiscriminate bombings are illegal under international humanitarian law. Biden himself admits that Israel is bombing Gaza indiscriminately”.

The list goes on and on … However, Israel’s breach of Vienna Convention immunity accorded to diplomatic premises – plus the stature of those killed – is highly significant. It is a major signal: Israel wants war – but with U.S. support, of course.

Israel’s aim, firstly, is to destroy the norms, conventions and laws of warfare; to create geo-political anarchy in which anything goes, and by which, with the White House frustrated, yet acquiescing to each norm of conduct obtrusively trodden underfoot, allows Netanyahu to grip the U.S. bridle and lead the White House horse to water – towards his regional End of Times ‘Great Victory’; a necessarily brutal war – beyond existing red lines and devoid of limits.

As symbolically significant as the Damascus attack is that the U.S., France and Britain – after a brief ‘hat tip’ to the Vienna Convention – refused to condemn the levelling of the Iranian Consulate, thus placing the shadow of doubt over the Vienna Convention’s immunity for diplomatic premises.

Implicitly, this refusal to condemn will be widely understood as a soft condoning of Israel’s first tentative step towards war with Hizbullah and Iran.

Soured co-founders of a conspiracy-minded fringe organization called Group for Romania (GPR) are distancing themselves from the group and its anti-Western message after it appealed for Chinese help and Russian intervention to restore lost Romanian "sovereignty."

In recent weeks the group -- which has included university lecturers, a former judge, economists, as well as prominent actors -- appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping for salvation from a "Judeo-Euro-Atlantic political regime."

Some GPR defectors have criticized that message as "shameful" and "unforgivable," and a well-known Romanian political scientist has described it as a risky result of "hallucination."

In a March 26 online petition titled Communique No. 9 On Relations With The Russian Federation, addressed to Putin and other Russian leaders, GPR listed perceived racial, ethno-nationalist, and historical grievances and said that "Romania has fallen from the status of a colony to the status of a territory under foreign military occupation. We hope, Mr. President Putin, that you will help Romania in future historical moments to become a sovereign country again." By April 5, the petition had attracted 17 signatures.

Days later, Communique No. 10 was directed at China and urged Xi and Beijing to help Romania "escape the underdevelopment to which it was condemned by the Judeo-Westerners who seized the country in the decades after the assassination of former President Nicolae Ceausescu," the hated communist dictator who was summarily executed along with his wife in December 1989.

Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country and has been a steadfast supporter of Palestine. It has no formal relations with Israel and in December, the country banned all Israeli ships from docking at Malaysian ports.

Police in Malaysia arrested an Israeli man suspected to be a member of the Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency, on Friday.

The man, identified by as 36-year-old Shalom Avitan, according to some media reports, was reportedly arrested in Kuala Lumpur at a local hotel. Authorities say he had six handguns, three of which were loaded, and more than 200 rounds of ammunition. Avitan reportedly gave the authorities a fake French passport but surrendered his Israeli passport during questioning.

snip

On Saturday, three Malaysian nationals, including a married couple, were arrested under suspicion of helping the Israeli suspect. The couple is accused of providing the alleged agent with weapons, while the third Malaysian is under investigation for acting as the suspect’s driver.

snip

The Mossad has long been suspected of operating in Malaysia. In 2018, a Gaza-born electrical engineer was gunned down by two motorcyclists suspected of being linked to the Mossad. In 2022, a man was kidnapped in Malaysia, allegedly as part of a Mossad plot.

While legal gun ownership is possible in Malaysia, it is limited to citizens and requires every weapon to be licensed. The country also has some of the strictest punishments in the world for firearm violations. The suspect is being investigated under the Passport Act of 1966 and the Firearms Act for unlicensed possession of weapons. If charged and found guilty, he could be sentenced to death.

As for the US or the UK, Russians assess that without intelligence inputs, satellite imagery, and even logistical backing by the western powers, Ukraine does not have the capability to undertake operations deep inside Russia or the sort of complex attacks targeting Russian war ships of the Black Sea Fleet. But the western powers are invariably in a denial mode when confronted with such accusations by Russia.

There is no question that the Crocus City Hall attack will have profound geopolitical consequences and will impact the trajectory of the Ukraine war. The incident has rallied world sympathy massively for Russia. It is a huge challenge of statecraft now for Putin to act decisively, as the Russian public will expect, to completely uproot the dark forces entrenched next-door.

Conceivably, that may involve Moscow shaking up the very foundations of the house that Washington built in Kiev after the 2024 coup. The New York Times recently disclosed that the CIA keeps a string of intelligence outposts all along the Ukraine-Russia border regions.

Make no mistake, the US is determined to hold on to the extensive infrastructure it created in Ukraine to mount covert operations and destabilise Russia, no matter what it takes. The bottom line in the western strategy is to weaken Russia and prevent it from playing an adversarial role on the global stage.

TS Eliot’s lines from the play Murder in the Cathedral come to mind: ‘What peace can be found / To grow between the hammer and the anvil?’ The war is slated to escalate dramatically and it is a matter of time before western combat deployment takes place in Ukraine to salvage that country’s residual potential as a frontline state for NATO in the proxy war against Russia. On their part, Russia may have no alternative but to seek a total military victory. The multi-layered Russian reaction will unfold depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry Statement in connection with the 25th anniversary of NATO aggression against Yugoslavia

History knows many events which, by virtue of their profound impact on the international order, marked a change of eras.

The NATO attack on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on March 24, 1999 is certainly one such event. It went beyond being a tragic milestone in the life of the Serbian people with thousands of ruined lives and desecrated national dignity, and included a devastating blow to international law and European security foundations that had been laid after World War II. The United States and the EU got finally convinced in their own impunity and moral superiority which was bad news for those who prefer to choose their own path rather than become someone’s tool in their efforts to realise their own interests. The strategic balance of power collapsed, and a drawn-out crisis of international relations ensued which continues to worsen.

The US and its allies who assaulted a peaceful European country trampled on the UN Charter and the CSCE/OSCE principles, and desecrated the very notion of sovereignty. They have thus made it clear that they will stoop to anything, including radioactive contamination of vast swathes of land, to achieve global dominance. The widespread use of depleted uranium munitions by NATO has led to a multifold increase in cancer cases in that region, contaminated the environment where millions of people had lived for many years, and went down in history as a separate dark chapter on the list of NATO crimes.

During the 78 days of military aggression 14,000 bombs were dropped on Yugoslavia and over 2,000 missiles were fired, including cluster and demolition shells. Under the mocking front of a “humanitarian intervention,” mostly civilian targets were hit, including residential districts, hospitals, schools, bridges, mass transit vehicles, and refugee convoys. Thousands of civilians were killed, including 89 children, whom the Western coalition cynically referred to as “collateral damage.” No one has ever been held accountable for these atrocities, and international justice turned a deaf ear to the suffering of the Serbs and let NATO atrocities go unnoticed.

Not only the bombed-out buildings of the Yugoslav General Staff and Defence Ministry in central Belgrade which irritate the US officials to this day remind us of those terrible days. Serbia has many other unhealed wounds. A portion of the country’s ancestral territory, Kosovo and Metohija, has been forcibly taken away. The West has taken under its wing terrorists from the Kosovo Liberation Army, gave the province the status of a pseudo-state, and encourages the expulsion of the indigenous Serbian population.

This inevitably begs the question: was the “Kosovo project” worth the sacrifice and destruction that the alliance brought upon Yugoslavia? Has the self-proclaimed “republic” added stability or prosperity to the Balkan region?

There is no doubt that the United States’ concern for the rights of Kosovo Albanians is a fake claim from the get-go. It is nothing but a false pretext for the crackdown on Serbs.

The West’s goal was to turn the provisional self-governing bodies in Pristina into a tool for anti-Serb ethnic cleansing and a festering trouble spot to put pressure on Belgrade. At the end of the day, the Kosovo settlement is in a deadlock, and the situation on the ground threatens to escalate into an armed conflict.

This is what the Western “peacemaking” is all about. Its disastrous ramifications can now be seen in Ukraine, where a neo-Nazi regime has been nurtured on the basis of Washington and its supporters’ rejection of the principles of equality and mutual respect in international affairs, a regime that committed genocide against the Russian population and plunged the country into a military face-off.

We can hear the US and the EU increasingly call on Serbs to “turn the page” and forgive NATO for the invasion that took place 25 years ago. On top of that, they lay the bulk of the blame on the Serbs for the dramatic events during the breakup of Yugoslavia, including the 1999 bombing attacks. I’d be hard pressed to find proper words to describe the extent of Western shamelessness and lack of self-criticism.

The Alliance will never be able to wash off the shame of war crimes. No one believes its demagoguery about defending freedom and democracy anymore. The United States and the rest of NATO have no right whatsoever to talk about implementing an obscure new “rules-based order.” Their every effort to put together some kind of “global security architecture” is by definition malevolent and toxic, and aimed solely at perpetrating the neocolonial hegemony of the West.

Russia and its partners in Belgrade will continue to oppose the attempts to distort the history of the Yugoslav crisis and to shift the emphasis to demonising Serbs and justifying the 1999 aggression. The attempts to insult the memory of the innocent victims of NATO hangmen are unacceptable.

Ruins of Yugoslavia: How Russia learned that NATO poses a threat by chakokat in WayOfTheBern

[–]chakokat[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

What conclusions did the world draw?

The bombing of Yugoslavia was an important and, apparently, highly underestimated turning point in relations between Russia and the West. Both the Russian elite and society painfully reacted to the tragic events in Yugoslavia. This may sound strange, but Russia once harbored idealistic sentiments about the great Western democracies. When the Cold War ended, it seemed that the US and NATO were unfairly slandered by Soviet propaganda. Unfortunately, there was a lot of truth to the Soviet propaganda. For Russia, it was quite painful to realize that world politics still resembled an aquarium full of hungry sharks. Moreover, Russia traditionally had close and friendly relations with Serbia and the Serbian people. But now the Serbs were publicly attacked and humiliated.

How Russian troops confronted NATO forces in Yugoslavia, in a significant post-Soviet first

The elites had their own reasons for concern. The Kremlin regarded Russia-US and Russia-West relations in an idealistic way. But, in 1999, Moscow clearly saw that international law doesn’t provide any guarantees on the global arena. Yugoslavia was destroyed without any serious grounds, simply because Western politicians had decided so. The country lost part of its territory and the cut-off enclave was subjected to ethnic cleansing while the world turned a blind eye. And all this was done under the guise of a “rules-based international order.” Territorial integrity was considered one of the inviolable principles of international law but it, too, was trampled. Moreover, in the general context of the Balkan wars and conflicts, all the blame was put on Yugoslavia/Serbia, regardless of whether the Serbs were rebels who fought against the government or vice versa. None of this resembled justice or law. It became clear that neither agreements nor international law could protect any country, including Russia, from external military force, and that countries could only rely on the political situation and their own ability to cope with threats.

This realization was doubly important since Russia had a similar problem with Islamist insurgents in Chechnya. The Kremlin could not help but think that, if the West could use this pretext to attack Yugoslavia, it could use the same strategy against Russia. On the other hand, Moscow came to the reasonable conclusion that if an arbitrator twists the rules as he likes, he loses authority. The sarcastic expression “You don’t understand, this case is different” – which implies the hypocrisy of those who condemn others for certain actions while engaging in condemned behavior – remains popular on Russian internet to this day. For the Russian political elite, Kosovo became a classic example of a “different case.” Western journalists and politicians often emphasized that the situation in Kosovo was unique. However, the ill-fated region was obviously no different from dozens of other hotspots. Why was Kosovo a “special case”? Why weren’t Transnistria, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Serbian Krajina, or Catalonia just as exceptional? What other situations will be considered “special,” and what other conflicts between authorities and separatists will be sufficient grounds for NATO to carry out bombings and allow ethnic cleansing?

The bombing of Belgrade destroyed the image of a new “rules-based international order.” Of course, it wasn’t the last time that the rule of law and the demands of justice were ignored by the great world powers after the collapse of the Soviet Union – in fact, the bloody Iraq war followed only four years later. However, the events in Yugoslavia had clearly demonstrated that a country that wants to protect its sovereignty from external threats can only rely on its own strength and on proven allies.

Why the West Cannot Stomach Russians by chakokat in WayOfTheBern

[–]chakokat[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Many Russians look white. Most of them eat with knife and fork, they drink alcohol, excel at Western classical music, poetry, literature, science and philosophy.

To Western eyes they look ‘normal’, but actually, they are not.

Russians always want ‘something else’; they refuse to play by Western rules.

They are stubbornly demanding to remain different, and to be left alone.

When confronted, when attacked, they fight.

They rarely strike first, almost never invade.

But when threatened, when assaulted, they fight with tremendous determination and force, and they never lose. Villages and cities get converted into invader’s graves. Millions die while defending their Motherland, but the country survives. And it happens again and again and again, as the Western hordes have been, for centuries, assaulting and burning Russian lands, never learning the lesson and never giving up on their sinister dream of conquering and controlling that proud and determined colossus.

In the West, they don’t like those who defend themselves, who fight against them, and especially those who win.

It gets much worse than that. Russia has this terrible habit… not only it defends itself and its people, but it also fights for others, protecting colonized and pillaged nations, as well as those that are unjustly assaulted.

It saved the world from Nazism. It did it at a horrific price of 27 million men, women and children, but it did it; courageously, proudly and altruistically. The West never forgave the Soviet Union for this epic victory either, because all that is unselfish and self-sacrificing, is always in direct conflict with its own principles, and therefore ‘extremely dangerous’.

Sending weapons to Israel illegal, US lawmakers say by chakokat in WayOfTheBern

US Democratic lawmakers are warning President Joe Biden that providing weapons to Israel is illegal under existing US law because Israel is withholding US humanitarian aid from Gaza as famine looms.

Haaretz reported on 24 March that the group of prominent lawmakers sent a letter to President Biden stating that "so long as Israel continues to restrict the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, the continued provision of U.S. security assistance to Israel would constitute a violation of existing U.S. law and must be restricted."

The letter added, "Given the catastrophic and devolving humanitarian situation in Gaza, we urge you to enforce the Humanitarian Aid Corridor Act."

The 1994 law states that the US may provide no military aid to any country "when it is made known to the President that the government of such country prohibits or otherwise restricts, directly or indirectly, the transport or delivery of United States humanitarian assistance." However, the president is empowered under the law to issue a waiver to allow weapons shipments to continue.

The letter stated further that Israel's restriction on the delivery of humanitarian aid has made Israel “ineligible to receive continued U.S. weapons under Section 620I.”

This was included in his remarks to US channel PBS on Friday, in response to a question about his statements at the United Nations (UN) Security Council in which he asserted: “Israel is using starvation as a weapon of war.”

Borrell pointed out: “It is a starvation in Gaza. Hundreds of thousands of people are starving literally, among them many children who have been dying by this nutrition.”

“If there is starvation, why there is starvation? Because there is not enough humanitarian support entering to support these people? And why is it? Because Israel is controlling the border, and not letting humanitarian support to come in. So, it is the logical consequences, no? You prevent humanitarian support from coming and people are starving, isn’t it logical cause and effect there?” he continued.

They correctly say: if these Taurus hit that part of the Crimean Bridge, which, of course, even according to their concepts, is Russian territory, this is a violation of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany.”

Yet it gets curioser and curioser.

When the transcript of the Taurus leak was published by RT, everyone was able to hear Brigadier General Frank Gräfe – head of operations of the German Air Force – speaking with Lieutenant Colonel Fenske from the German Space Command Air Operations on the plan to deploy Taurus systems in Ukraine.

A key point is that during the plotting, these two mention that plans were already discussed “four months ago” with “Schneider”, the successor of “Wilsbach”.

Well, these are German names, of course. Thus it did not dawn on anyone that (Kevin) Schneider and (Kenneth) Wilsbach could instead be… Americans.

Yet that did raise the eyebrows of German investigative journalist Dirk Pohlmann – who I had the pleasure to meet in Berlin years ago – and his fellow researcher Tobias Augenbraun.

They found out that the German-sounding names did identify Americans. Not only that: none less than the former and the current Commanders of the U.S. Pacific Air Forces.

The Four (actually Six) Stooges element gets an extra boost when it is established that Liver Sausage Chancellor Scholz and his Totalenkrieg Minister Pistorius learned about the Taurus plan no less than four months later.

So here apparently we have a clear cut case of top German military officers taking direct orders regarding an attack on Crimea – part of the Russian Federation – directly from American officers in the Pacific Air Forces. ( bold mine )

25 Years On… How the NATO Bombing of Yugoslavia Led to the U.S. Proxy War in Ukraine Against Russia by chakokat in WayOfTheBern

[–]chakokat[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Twenty-five years ago in March 1999, the U.S.-led NATO alliance launched a 10-week bombing campaign on former Yugoslavia. It led to the balkanization of Serbia and Kosovo.

It also led to the further enlargement of the NATO military bloc and endless foreign military interventions in violation of international law.

The NATO campaign to bomb Yugoslavia – only eight years after the end of the Cold War – invoked a humanitarian pretext but it did not have a legal mandate from the UN Security Council.

It therefore was an illegal aggression perpetrated largely on the say-so of Washington. President Joe Biden, then a senator, was wholeheartedly in favor of the audacious military action in Eastern Europe.

Alex Krainer, author of Grand Deception, contends that the NATO military aggression in Yugoslavia in 1999 was a strategic gambit by the U.S.-led Western powers to pursue hegemonic ambitions of dominating Russia and any other geopolitical rival.

The aggression 25 years ago fatally undermined international law and set a precedent for the next quarter century of endless U.S. and NATO wars around the world, including in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, across the Middle East and North Africa, and elsewhere.

The current U.S.-led NATO proxy war in Ukraine against Russia can be traced back to the historic assault on Yugoslavia.

In attacking Yugoslavia, says Krainer, the U.S. and its NATO vassals were serving notice to the rest of the world that they would not be bound by international law. In many ways, the conflict in Ukraine is the culmination of that hegemonic lawless mindset and conduct. ( bold mine )

BRITAIN's £3billion flagship aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth has "caught fire" while docked in Scotland.

The Royal Navy ship was moored at Glenmallan on the shores of Loch Long when the fire broke out on Saturday.

It is understood that no one was injured and no ordnance was involved. The Royal Navy said: "A minor, isolated fire on HMS Queen Elizabeth was quickly brought under control and extinguished.”

Scottish Fire and Rescue is now working with the Navy to probe the cause of the fire.

General Michael Langley, the commander of U.S. Africa Command (Africom), says that Russia is taking aggressive steps in Africa to secure control over vast areas stretching from the southern borders of the NATO alliance in Libya to resource-rich parts in Central Africa.

Langley addressed the U.S. Senate last Thursday, highlighting that both Russia and China have long-term plans for Africa. However, he noted that Russia is moving at an "accelerated pace," taking advantage of the unrest in West Africa, which has seen coups in recent years.

He also confirmed a reduction in U.S. intervention in places like Niger and Mali due to government overthrows, which has also paved the way for a more prominent Russian presence in the region.

Russian security forces, whether private contractors or government entities have bolstered their presence in coup-stricken countries, as well as Libya and the Central African Republic, aiming to demonstrate power and access natural resources, including valuable minerals, Langley added.

Russia’s rail boosted by demand to move goods to Europe after Red Sea attacks by chakokat in WayOfTheBern

[–]chakokat[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Demand to move goods from Asia to Europe by rail via Russia has soared since the start of the Red Sea crisis, according to logistics companies and rail operators, boosting the finances of the country’s state-owned rail monopoly.

Germany’s DHL said requests to transport goods on the Russian rail corridor had jumped about 40 per cent since container ships started diverting via a longer route in December. RailGate Europe said demand was up 25 to 35 per cent, while Netherlands-based Rail Bridge Cargo said cargo rail traffic via Russia this year was 31 per cent higher compared with the same time last year.

Logistics companies have looked anew at routes through Russia following the decision of most large container shipping lines to divert Asia to Europe sailings that would normally go through the Suez Canal to travel via the Cape of Good Hope. They acted after a campaign of attacks on commercial ships was launched by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis in support of Gaza’s Palestinians.

The diversions have pushed up door-to-door journey times between China and Northern Europe by seven to 10 days, to between 50 and 55 days. DHL said door-to-door journey times by rail through Russia between Chengdu in China and Duisburg in Germany were currently between 25 and 30 days.

“The requests have picked up since the beginning of the situation in the Red Sea by around 40 per cent,” DHL said of customer inquiries about rail. “The overwhelming amount is going through Russia.”

However, the company stressed that it was carrying no traffic originating in or travelling to Russia in line with western exports restrictions imposed on Russia for its war on Ukraine.

“We’re doing severe export controls, in line with applicable sanctions,” said DHL.

Large NATO drills in the frigid fjords of northern Norway may be just war games meant to hone the fighting skills of the newly expanded 32-nation military alliance. But for troops taking part, they are very real.

And that’s the whole point.

With drills underway, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is baring its fangs in its biggest exercises since the Cold War, sending a message to Russia that alliance members are ready to defend one another if needed.

The Nordic drill in the northern regions of Finland, Norway and Sweden kicked off Monday and involves more than 20,000 soldiers from 13 nations. It is part of wider exercises known as Steadfast Defender 24, NATO’s biggest in decades, with up to 90,000 troops involved over several months. The exercises are aimed at showing that the alliance can defend all of its territory, up to its borders with Russia.

On Saturday, Russia formally requested a convening of the UN Security Council to address French Leader Emmanuel Macron's proposal regarding the deployment of NATO troops to Ukraine.

Addressing a gathering at the UN Security Council session in New York, Dmitry Polyansky, Russia's deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Security Council, expressed Moscow's interest in obtaining further clarification regarding "ideas fraught with the beginning of the Third World War."

On February 27th, Macron reaffirmed his proposal to NATO allies regarding the possibility of deploying troops to Ukraine. However, he noted that while there hasn't been an official consensus reached on sending ground troops "has not yet been reached, but nothing can be ruled out."

Polyansky further emphasized the importance of discussing leaked conversations involving German Air Force officers discussing the supply of Taurus missiles to Ukraine.

Additionally, he highlighted media reports suggesting that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has established a network of spy bases in Ukraine near the Russian border. These developments underscore the need for comprehensive discussions on various aspects of the ongoing situation in the region.

"It would be interesting to hear a comment in connection with a conversation leaked to the media by high-ranking German military officials who talked about how to help Ukrainians destroy the Kerch Bridge in Crimea and strike deep into Russian territory," he stated.

Rabbi Eliyahu Mali, head of the Shirat Moshe yeshiva (religious school) in the occupied city of Jaffa, called on the Israeli army to kill everyone in Gaza, including babies.

During a conference on 8 March, Mali said that “according to the halachic principle (a religious-ethical system of legal reasoning in Judaism), all residents of Gaza must be killed.”

When asked during the conference if babies should be killed as well, he said: “The same thing. You can't be clever with the Torah. Today he's a baby, tomorrow he's a fighter. There are no questions here. Today's terrorists were previously 8-year-old children.”

“Those who create the terrorists” should also be killed, he said in reference to women in Gaza.

The Rabbi went on to explain that Israel’s war on Gaza is a “Mitzvah war,” which is defined as a war of “commandment” in Jewish tradition. According to Jewish law, this kind of war does not require permission from a “Sanhedrin,” also known as a council or assembly, such as the war against Amalek – previously declared in a biblical reference by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the start of the war on Gaza.

The spokesperson for the Yemeni Armed Forces announced on Monday two separate operations carried out in the Red and Arabian Seas, as part of support to the people of Gaza and their Resistance currently facing an ongoing Israeli genocide, and in response to the US-UK aggressions on the country.

Brigadier General Yahya Saree said in an evening statement that Yemen's Naval Forces targeted and directly hit the MSC SKY Israeli ship in the Arabian Sea, revealing that the operation was carried out using "appropriate" naval missiles. The second attack included the launch of a number of drones and ballistic missiles targeting several US warships in the Red Sea, he added.

The Yemeni Foreign Ministry in the Sanaa government had affirmed on Saturday that "in light of the Zionist obstinacy supported by the United States and Britain," Yemen stands firm in preventing the entry of ships affiliated with the Israeli entity.

"We hold the United States directly responsible for the Zionist escalation due to the unlimited support provided by Washington and its allies to the entity ['Israel'] politically, materially, militarily, and logistically, including hindering the Security Council from fulfilling its role in maintaining international peace and security," the ministry said in a statement. On Monday, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov warned that Russia would retaliate in kind to any actions taken by Western countries against its assets abroad.

"This is not a question for us. We are watching the decisions of the Western countries. Any actions with our assets will receive a symmetrical response," he said.

Western countries have imposed sanctions on Russia since February 2022, freezing both sovereign and private assets. The country's currency reserves were frozen to the amount of roughly US$300 billion.

Various reasons have been cited for seizing the Russian assets. In October 2022, the EU leaders asked the European Commission to draft proposals for using the frozen assets to finance the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Russia has responded strongly against the Western sanctions. The Kremlin said they "would be another step towards violating all the rules and norms of international law." The Russian Foreign Ministry denounced freezing Russian assets in Europe as theft.

On Monday, China voiced firm opposition to the EU's decision to put four Chinese companies on a list in its 13th round of sanctions against Russia.

"This is unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction that has no basis in international law, nor a mandate from the United Nations Security Council," China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said.

"This act runs counter to the spirit of the consensus reached during meetings of Chinese and EU leaders and will have a negative impact on China-EU economic and trade relations," it added.

China urged the EU to bear in mind the overall interests of the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership and unconditionally stop blacklisting the Chinese firms. China will resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises, it added.

His career begun at the family bank, NM Rothschild & Sons, before he moved on to start his own wealth management fund in 1989.

The Rothschild family has an estimated fortune of around £825m, according to last year's Sunday Times Rich List.

Lord Rothschild was described as "a superbly accomplished financier, a champion of the arts and culture, a devoted public servant, a passionate supporter of charitable causes in Israel and Jewish culture, a keen environmentalist and much-loved friend, father and grandfather," in a statement released by his family. Born in Berkshire in 1936, the late financier was educated at Eton College and went on to study history at Christ Church College, Oxford.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan appears to have acknowledged that Armenia’s deepening ties with the European Union and the United States are causing unease in neighboring Iran.

snip

In recent months, Iranian leaders have repeatedly told their Armenian counterparts that Tehran strongly opposes the geopolitical presence of “extra-regional countries” in the South Caucasus. Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi conveyed the same message to Armenia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan as recently as on February 15. Any intervention of “outsiders” in regional disputes could only exacerbate, rather than resolve, them, Raisi said in a clear reference to the US and the EU.

This was interpreted by some Armenian commentators as a fresh warning to Yerevan which has been seeking closer security ties with the Western powers amid its unprecedented tensions with Russia. The latter has openly denounced Western efforts to broker an Armenian-Azerbaijani peace deal, saying that their main aim is to drive Moscow out of the region.

Both Russia and Iran have criticized Armenia for hosting a US-Armenian military exercise last September. The Islamic Republic is also believed to share Russian concerns about the EU’s monitoring mission along Armenia’s border with Azerbaijan launched a year ago.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on Thursday that the EU relies completely on China for lithium, as the bloc imports 97% of its required supply of the material from the country.

"We have observed that China, over the last 20 to 30 years, has strategically bought mine after mine globally. They take the raw material, they have the processing procedures in China and then they have the monopoly for this raw material. Take lithium: 97% of the lithium we use in the European Union is from China. So we are totally dependent on this one on China," von der Leyen said during her opening speech at the Clean Tech Industry Dialogue in Brussels.

Media reports in September 2023 indicated that the EU faced the possibility of becoming equally dependent on China for lithium-ion batteries by 2030 as it had been on Russia for fossil fuels before the latter initiated its special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022. ( bold mine )

Biden on Wednesday called Putin a “crazy SOB [son of a b****]” during a fundraiser for his re-election campaign in San Francisco as he spoke about threats to the world, including “that guy Putin and others”, the risk of nuclear conflict and the existential threat to humanity from climate change.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Thursday condemned the remarks and said it was “unlikely to infringe on our president”. “But it debases those who use such vocabulary,” he said.

It is not the first time Biden has used the offensive term. In 2022, he was heard on a hot mic calling a Fox News journalist an SOB. And he has in the past also described Putin as a “butcher” and a “war criminal”.

Peskov added that the remark was “probably some kind of attempt to look like a Hollywood cowboy. But honestly, I don’t think it’s possible”.

“Has Mr Putin ever used one crude word to address you? This has never happened. Therefore, I think that such a vocabulary debases America itself,” he said.

Unproven by whom? By the U.S. government? Do we expect them to “prove” their own illegal actions? When have they ever? Blowing up NS2? White Helmets in Syria? Assassinating JFK,MLK and RFK? Operation Menu - the bombing of Cambodia? So many crimes denied, denied and denied.

The MoD Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, the head of the radiation, chemical and biological defense for the Russian armed forces says so and I’m sure they, the MoD, have the proof. Russians don’t make wild accusations publicly without having proof.

They have proof that the U.S. was funding and running bioweapons labs in Ukraine and that actually forced Victoria Nuland (squirming and hemming and hawing) to admit in Congress that Ukraine had bioweapons labs.

Brazil fires back at ‘outrageous’ Israeli response to Lula comments by chakokat in WayOfTheBern

The comments made by Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz about Lula are "unacceptable in their nature and lying in their content," Vieira said on Tuesday. He added that Katz's comments were "outrageous."

"For a foreign ministry to address a head of state from a friendly country in this way is unusual and revolting. It is a shameful page in the history of Israel's diplomacy," the Brazilian diplomat went on to say, adding that Israel is trying to cover up its crimes in Gaza with a smokescreen.

Katz accused Lula on 19 February of making a "serious antisemitic attack." The Israeli foreign minister said Israel will not "forgive or forget" what the Brazilian president said, adding that he is "persona non grata in Israel until he takes it back."

On 18 February, the Brazilian head of state compared Israel's genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip to the Nazi Holocaust.

"What's happening in the Gaza Strip isn't a war; it's a genocide. It's not a war of soldiers against soldiers. It's a war between a highly prepared army and women and children. What's happening in the Gaza Strip with the Palestinian people hasn't happened at any other moment in history. Actually, it has happened: when Hitler decided to kill the Jews," Lula said.

Russia has recorded cases of Ukrainian troops using US chemical munitions during the special military operation, Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, the head of the radiation, chemical and biological defense troops of the Russian armed forces, said on Monday.

"During the special military operation, cases of US chemical weapons used by the armed forces of Ukraine were recorded," Kirillov told a briefing.

"Ukraine, with the complicity of Western countries, does not limit itself to the use of non-lethal chemicals, but actively using chemicals from the list. I would like to draw attention to the statement by representatives of the Ukrainian armed forces about the availability of such compounds at their disposal, including analogues of the combat toxic substance Tabun, which is included in List 1 of the Convention [on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction]," Kirillov said.

Olaf Scholz blocked Ursula von der Leyen from becoming the new head of Nato because he believed she would be too tough on Russia, German media reported on Saturday.

The German chancellor, who has faced criticism for his cautious approach to diplomacy with Vladimir Putin, reportedly told Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, that he was against the appointment.

“Scholz was categorically against von der Leyen becoming Nato head,” German newspaper Welt am Sonntag reported, citing officials in Brussels and European diplomats.

Ms von der Leyen had been too critical of Putin, and this could “prove to be a disadvantage in the long term” in the view of Mr Scholz, the sources added.

Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary-general of Nato, is due to step down from the role in October, having extended his tenure three times.

The U.S. will transfer confiscated Russian funds to Estonia to be used in support of Ukraine, the Justice Department announced Saturday.

The nearly $500,000 sum was secured from “an illegal procurement network attempting to import into Russia a high-precision, U.S.-origin machine tool with uses in the defense and nuclear proliferation sectors,” according to a DOJ press release.

It is the first time the U.S. will transfer funds to a foreign ally for the explicit purpose of assisting Ukraine and comes as foreign aid for the embattled nation has stalled in Congress.

The funds are being transferred to Estonia because current authorities do not allow for a direct transfer to Ukraine. According to deputy attorney general Lisa Monaco, the funds will be used for a project designed to streamline damage assessments of Ukraine’s electrical transmission and distribution systems.

“This is an incremental step toward justice and restoration. But it is a necessary step. And it blazes a new trail towards combatting Russia’s ongoing brutality,” said Monaco in remarks prepared for delivery at the Munich Security Conference in Germany.

“The Department of Justice will continue pursuing creative solutions to ensure the Ukrainian people can respond and rebuild. Dollar by dollar. House by house. Town by town,” Monaco added, noting that the administration would not wait for Congress, but rather would use existing authorities to provide assistance to Ukraine.

THE MOST RELEVANT fact about the Biden administration’s current position on the war against Gaza is this: There is no Israeli war crime too extreme for Joe Biden to consider pausing, to say nothing of cutting off, the flow of U.S. weapons and financial support for Israel’s war of annihilation. On Tuesday, the Senate passed an extraordinary $14 billion in additional military aid for Israel to continue its occupation and bombing of the Palestinians of Gaza. Biden remains defiant in rejecting global demands for an immediate cessation of Israel’s military assault on a starving, overwhelmingly defenseless population. Not only has Biden flatly rejected suggestions that he use the threat of halting military sales to Israel, his administration is currently preparing a new shipment of powerful munitions to Tel Aviv.

As the conservative death toll in Gaza nears 30,000 — with more than 13,000 children confirmed dead — the White House spin doctors are worried about the 2024 U.S. election. They are desperately trying to project a public image of compassion for the people of Gaza and to sell the public on the idea that Biden has reached the end of his patience with his great friend of nearly 50 years, Benjamin Netanyahu. Confronted with a disastrous series of public statements by Biden where he claimed to have recently met with long-deceased world leaders and a special counsel’s assertions about his mental acumen, the president’s re-election campaign has been thrust into a scramble to stabilize their public narrative.

During the short history of Moldova's independence, the relations that Moldova and the Russian Federation have today are probably the worst. How do you explain this?

The people that came to power in Moldova promised that they would be friends with everyone. In reality, however, they chose very harsh anti-Russian rhetoric and started working to break all relations in both diplomatic and economic spheres. The Intergovernmental Commission on Economic and Social Cooperation that our countries have has not had one single meeting since 2020, even though a platform like this is necessary for solving economic and social problems. For example, Moldova can not export its wines, fruits and vegetable to Russia.

Hundreds of thousands of our migrants in the Russian Federation suffer from problems. The anti-Russian course of Maia Sandu and her Anglo-Saxon supervisors affects the lives of our citizens. Our economy is collapsing. Farmers started staging riots this weekend and blocked customs with Romania for an hour. The inflation rate in Moldova exceeded the level of 50 percent in two years. Gas prices in Moldova are the highest in Eastern Europe. A cubic meter of gas for the population costs 18 lei, that is, about 100 Russian rubles (for comparison, the price for a cubic meter of natural gas for household needs in Russia is 6 rubles 58 kopecks — ed).

snip

Is it true that you one said, quote: "Sandu's Western masters need a war and Transnistria may become a new hot spot”?

Many people in Moldova, officials in Ukraine and experts have been talking about it indeed. If Ukraine loses, then they can create a problem in Transnistria. They are not doing it yet, because Ukraine officially considers Transnistria part of Moldova. If they attack Transnistria, they will become aggressors in relation to us. An attack on Transnistria without Maia Sandu's consent means aggression against an independent country. The Ukrainians wanted Sandu to sign such a secret letter of agreement last year. For the time being, Maia Sandu has not given official consent to such actions.

I publicly said that if Ukrainians or Western partners put pressure on Sandu, she should better step down than become a president who starts a war in Moldova.

Is the current regime ready to support the conflict in Transnistria? I think not, especially since we have presidential and parliamentary campaigns ahead of us. By the way, Maia Sandu, who won the presidential election 3.5 years ago, promised that she would not infringe on anyone's rights. She would speak Russian very often. Three years into her presidency, she has banned all Russian channels, she has banned the Russian language too.

Now that the election campaign is starting over, Sandu can be heard speaking Russian again.

Senior officials attending an Indo-Pacific summit in Brussels took aim at the EU’s perceived inability to “underline the respect of international law in a consistent manner”.

“No state is above the law,” Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said in opening remarks at the event, urging European countries not to withdraw their support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, which operates in Gaza.

“I appeal to all of you to listen to your heart and do the right thing, stop the atrocities in Gaza, in Palestine,” she said, adding that “consistency with values and actions reflect sincerity of moral high ground … it shows who we actually are”.

Later, responding to questions from the South China Morning Post, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry echoed Marsudi’s accusations.

“We represent the sentiment of the global south, that there’s double standards when it comes to the Middle East. The conflict needs to be looked at on a merit-based order. There can’t be double standards for what is happening in Ukraine and Middle East,” Sabry said.

Western pharmaceutical companies used psychiatric ward patients in Mariupol as test subjects in drug trials while the city was under Kiev’s jurisdiction, according to a trove of documents discovered in the basement of one of the city hospitals. The papers show that even children from one to eleven years old were used as guinea pigs in those experiments, according to the documents discovered in the basement of hospital No. 7 in Mariupol by construction workers.

These drug trials were performed when Mariupol, a city with over 400,000 residents, was “under Ukrainian, meaning NATO control,” which “offered a concentration of hospitals, laboratories and convenient regional flight connections, to more easily coordinate the West’s bioweapon programs across Europe,” said Jeff J. Brown, co-founder and curator of the Bioweapon Truth Commission and the author of The China Trilogy.

“What the public fails to understand is that the West’s bioweapon development and use around the world are intimately interconnected with Big Pharma, vaccines and the military. Since 2005, Ukraine has become a hub for these four facets to merge, as they already did/do with the US’ existing 300+ bioweapon labs on every continent except Antarctica,” Brown told Sputnik. “If you are heavily involved in making bioweapons to exterminate millions of your perceived enemies, then using hapless local citizens as guinea pigs to test them and experimental drugs is perfectly alright.”

Despite being previously listed as an international sponsor of war by Kyiv, Hungary’s OTP Bank Group has shown interest in acquiring the Ukrainian government-owned Sense Bank, according to a February 12 report by Ukrainska Pravda, which cited anonymous sources with knowledge of the potential acquisition discussions.

Several weeks prior, Yurii Drahanchuk, Ukraine’s Deputy Finance Minister, indicated that foreign investors had expressed interest in purchasing Sense Bank alongside Ukrgasbank, another state-run bank.

In 2023, Sense Bank and Ukrgasbank ranked within the top ten most profitable Ukrainian banks. Following sanctions against its owner, Russian oligarch Mikhail Fridman, Sense Bank, previously a branch of Fridman’s Alfa-Bank, was nationalized in summer 2023. On the other hand, Ukrgasbank has been an established commercial bank since 1993.

The largest commercial bank in Hungary, OTP Bank, also a key service provider in the financial realm across Central and Eastern Europe, is the possible buyer of Sense Bank.

Shapps has ordered a review of what he described as the "deeply unpopular and troubling" diversity and inclusion policies in the Armed Forces, such as gender neutral toilets.

The Tucker Carlson effect??

Some truth being told in US MSM! And this isn’t behind the usual paywall so they must want people to find out.

The Ukrainian military is facing a critical shortage of infantry, leading to exhaustion and diminished morale on the front line, military personnel in the field said this week — a perilous new dynamic for Kyiv nearly two years into the grinding, bloody war with Russia.

In interviews across the front line in recent days, nearly a dozen soldiers and commanders told The Washington Post that personnel deficits were their most critical problem now, as Russia has regained the offensive initiative on the battlefield and is stepping up its attacks.

One battalion commander in a mechanized brigade fighting in eastern Ukraine said that his unit currently has fewer than 40 infantry troops — the soldiers deployed in front-line trenches who hold off Russian assaults. A fully equipped battalion would have more than 200, the commander said.

snip

The reports of acute troop shortages come as President Volodymyr Zelensky is preparing to replace his military chief, Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, with one chief disagreement being over how many new soldiers Ukraine needs to mobilize.

snip

The debate in Kyiv about mobilization — and to what degree the country should ramp it up — has angered soldiers on the front line.

Oleksandr, a battalion commander, said the companies in his unit on average are staffed at about 35 percent of what they should be. A second battalion commander from an assault brigade said that is typical for units that carry out combat tasks. Asked how many new soldiers he has received — not including those who have returned after injuries — Oleksandr said his battalion was sent five people over the past five months. He and other commanders said the new recruits tend to be poorly trained, creating a dilemma about whether to send someone immediately onto the battlefield because reinforcements are needed so badly, even though they are likely to get injured or killed because they lack the know-how.

“The basis of everything is the lack of people,” Oleksandr said.

“Where are we going? I don’t know,” he added. “There’s no positive outlook. Absolutely none. It’s going to end in a lot of death, a global failure. And most likely, I think, the front will collapse somewhere like it did for the enemy in 2022, in the Kharkiv region.”

Mood darkens in Europe over Ukraine war’s direction by chakokat in WayOfTheBern

With Russian missiles and drones raining down on Ukrainian cities and NATO carrying out massive drills along the eastern front, Europe was on edge Wednesday after Polish fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a Russian rocket that appeared bound for Poland before it struck inside Ukrainian territory.

Three Polish F-16 warplanes were deployed Wednesday morning after a Russian missile was detected on a trajectory for Poland before falling inside Ukraine about 12 miles from the Polish border, according to news reports.

The missile was part of the latest massive Russian barrage against Ukrainian targets and cities. The attacks knocked out electricity in parts of Kyiv, killed at least five people and wounded more than 30, and exposed Ukraine's weakening air defenses.

The EU's top diplomat, Josep Borrell, was in the city discussing military and financial help for Ukraine and said he started his day in an air raid shelter.

For people in the European Union, the scrambling of Polish F-16s highlighted the high state of alarm in the bloc as the Ukraine war rages on nearly two years after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the invasion. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian and Russian troops have been killed and wounded in a war that has left Ukraine depopulated and in ruins.

This winter, the mood in Europe has sharply darkened because the war has taken a turn for the worse for Ukrainian troops and its Western allies. Numerous reports indicate that Russian forces, supported by far superior artillery power, may be on the verge of breaking through key Ukrainian defensive lines and there are fears Russia will launch a major offensive in the coming weeks or months.
