Yes, but I'd always prefer a new conviction for a new crime if one does happen. Our system still is based on it.

What is most disappointing about this event, though, is his quite early release from the previous conviction.

Oh well. Unlucky he won't be seen in court, lucky there is one terrorist less, and probably reasonable amount of force used - though ultimately that will be decided by British officials.

I wonder what exactly made them shoot him, when they had him on the ground already. Did he have a bomb-vest or something?

Deathaddict.co is blocked in Australia. Can we ban links to it or force submitters to provide alternate links in addition? by Vegita in WatchPeopleDie

[–]Phantom01 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It would of course be good if people posting from deathaddict posted an alternative way of seeing the vid, but I wouldn't discourage posting in general. Let's not ban deathaddict at least, who do you think that would help? I'd imagine we just got less posts in total.

Instead, I'd seek for a way to positively encourage posting another source at the same time. Don't know how though.

Wonder why none moved in to restrain him. I think it's quite stupid to prolong the time you have to watch out for the suspect instead of restraining him. What do they teach the police over there?

I'd say this could've ended better if there was a second cop. Perhaps at that point one could've moved in to restrain the guy, so that there would be no more threat. One thing I've started noticing is that often when the cops are way too trigger happy, they are alone and I wonder if these two things have a correlation and causation.

Agree with your conclusion.

I actually don't know how military does it or if there are any differences, but at least in civilian use there tends to be a reserve parachute in case the primary gets tangled up or has other problems. I'd be surprised if he really had nothing else to rely on.

What stopped them from getting closer to the ground and over water to let him go?

The stall speed (absolute minimum speed required to fly) for this aircraft (I'm almost certain this is CASA C-212) is apparently 145 km/h. If they flew right over the surface of water as slowly as possible and released him, the impact would be as bad as dropping him from 80 meters. At that point water would be probably as bad as any surface, perhaps even among the worse ones due to its incompressibility.

If we take into account that he'd hit the water along its surface, it would maybe be a bit better, but I'm sure you've seen what can happen to bikers falling over at high speeds especially with inadequate equipment. They lose limbs and get hurt otherwise, and that is across a mostly smooth surface.

Water isn't a smooth surface, it has waves and everything. I'd predict at least dislocations, broken bones and at least possible concussion, as well as all air being knocked out of him.

After landing in water he would have to detach his parachute and successfully swim to the shore, where he'd have to wait for medical assistance. I believe he'd drown with his parachute, without it, or die on the shore while medics are looking for him.

However he'd be released, he results would be horrifying.

It's a good question, but I think the answer is that it just doesn't really help his chances. Maybe releasing him high up and hoping for the chute to open and stay on him was the best that could be done.

As far as those titles go, the OP is LunaLovegood, who has already made a promise to make better titles in the future, so that point is null. There is no need to "police" what has already been discussed and dealt with.

"Title and Flair your post appropriately", rule 4. That's all I see, I don't know where you are getting this other bullsht, fake crp that it is.

There is no bullsht or fake crp here and I'm disappointed that you would accuse me of such for no good reason. Have a look at this quite recent announcement, it should clear things up regarding rules, as sadly not all is included in sidebar. Also, I'd expect a certain amount of general etiquette without having to have everything explicitly stated in the rules, but of course not everyone will follow such.

If you happen to be new to WPD community, a simple and effective guideline is just to tell what happens and where, why is perhaps the least important, although appreciated as well. For example, here the title could be simply "man shoots another man at a café" or since you seem to know the backstory, you could add that as a reason. But the most important is still that a man gets shot and the title should reflect that.

Also reminding you of the sidebar rules, which you according to your previous comment already know, please do try to adhere to the Pyramid of debate for the quality of this site and enjoyment of all users. I believe the expression "you f*cks" does slip down to the 2nd level.

Edited for better form.

Lately I've been critical of police using guns.

This, I think, would be an example of correct use of firearms. Good job by the second cop.

I am not saying that I could do better. I don't personally need to be able to deal with such a situation. I am saying that other countries can hold their police up to a higher standard and that USA could too, as there is no evident problem that makes them unable to.

I am not trying to criticize an individual cop since they surely did their best, but I am saying that if other systems can provide their police with the ability to answer situations like this with more limited force, USA is failing by not doing so.

Play stupid games, get potentially deadly prices. Applies both for base jumping and crime.

On the other hand, I cant imagine another civilized country where this couldn't have been dealt with without the use of a firearm.

  1. Why does the cop not seem to have a partner with him? That alone could've been enough to safely restrain the woman.

  2. Even without a partner, a cop should have sufficient training to deal with violence (from a clearly inferior opponent) with less than deadly tools.

I'd blame over-reliance on firearms. Do cops have insufficient training or is the general culture just "if it moves, it can be shot"? Both answers would be a reason to question the current state of police.

It might not be wrong to shoot the person and I will not accuse the cop of any immorality here, but I do think the performance was less than desirable level.

This could've ended differently if anyone had power tools and equipment to keep the fire at least under control. With such a big event as this seems to be, that could already be arranged.

Remember, if you do stupid stuff, be ready to do cleanup work.

Funky Town in this case refers to an execution video that is famous for being supposedly the worst gore video anyone knows. Due to the low quality of the video, I haven't really experienced the same, but the general opinion is Funkytown is as bad as it gets. So take that into consideration before watching it.
