That big cop with a bulletproof vest, training, and a baton couldn't take down that little woman?
Every country has scissors and somehow manages to get by without shooting strungout out-of-shape women. Pick up one of those chairs and pin her with the four legs on the ground, or swing it to hurt her arm/drop the scissors.
Don't get me wrong, I understand how this gets "justified shooting," and we are all on this site to "WatchPeopleDie" (not "Watch People Get Arrested"). But this definitely could have been done without lethal force. I'm sure he has mace on his belt. At least spray her in the face, and while she's fucked-up disarm her.

Or.. you know.... don't charge an officer with scissors and a knife while he's pointing a FUCKING GUN at you. Play stupid games, win stupid death.

He wrote that he understood it was justified. Nobody is doubting charging at a cop with a drawn gun is not the best idea.

Lots of other countries still manage it more gracefully than using lethal force the moment it's remotely justified ... or not justified at all really, not like they face much consequences either way.

She didn't charge him, she challenged him to shoot, idiot. Look at the video. I don't think her intention was to stab him. And also the fucking nigger cop escalated the situation with the angry woman. If you live her alone for a moment she would be more calm. Fuck the police !

The woman is acting irrationally and approaches him quickly with a sharp object. It's anyone's guess what her intentions were.

Sounds like a quick way to piss off someone and get stabbed in the neck.

This is just standard protocol for most police departments in the United States. When confronted with a potentially lethal weapon, deadly force is authorized. The reason the officer doesn't pick up a chair, use his mace, or use his baton is because they were never instructed to use those things for a situation like this. Mace and batons are more for forcing compliance on an unarmed, non-aggressive but resisting individual.

Protocols like these keep officers safe while performing their duties, but with the unfortunate drawback of putting the lives of ignorant members of the public at greater risk. Of course, the officer could set his training aside and try the things you suggested, but if you were the officer, would you really want to be improvising when you don't have to in a potential "life or death" situation, especially when that life is yours?

I know I wouldn't. I'd stick with my training to get me through.

A-fuckin-men brother!

There is some incentive for cops to shoot someone dead. You get time off with pay. Not the case if he was to pin her down and disarm her.

Even if he can, why should he?
Even a skilled martial artist can't say for sure that he's 100% safe against fighting someone charging with a sharp weapon.
So what's the point of risking your life trying to save someone who's trying to stab you with scissors?
Cops protecting law abiding citizens is a good thing. But cops protecting criminals? No, thank you.

When she gets shot she all like 𝒇 𝒍 𝒐 𝒐 𝒑

[–]oozinator1 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

She did a nice somersault too.

Wonder why the police was called though. Was she disrupting hotel operations or something?

"In response to the officer's commands to drop the weapon, Rupert used racial epithets and told the officer he would have to shoot her before she complied."

Well HE complied.

Daaang. This is the stupidest death by cop I've seen. Totally unnecessary.

I wonder if the guy was extra trigger happy because she used the word "nigga". (I didn't hear a hard R. lol) I wonder if he had to restrain himself when he heard the first N bomb.

i have news for you if you think POC care about a hard -ER or not from someone that looks like that. imagine being so deluded and self centred you can’t nix a single simple word from your vocab to make others comfortable. must be nice thinking you live in a world that’s all for you.

Well, this reads as being necessarily hostile.

Woman charges cop, cop shoots woman

Play stupid games, get potentially deadly prices. Applies both for base jumping and crime.

On the other hand, I cant imagine another civilized country where this couldn't have been dealt with without the use of a firearm.

  1. Why does the cop not seem to have a partner with him? That alone could've been enough to safely restrain the woman.

  2. Even without a partner, a cop should have sufficient training to deal with violence (from a clearly inferior opponent) with less than deadly tools.

I'd blame over-reliance on firearms. Do cops have insufficient training or is the general culture just "if it moves, it can be shot"? Both answers would be a reason to question the current state of police.

It might not be wrong to shoot the person and I will not accuse the cop of any immorality here, but I do think the performance was less than desirable level.

You are already have the luxury to think in hindsight about the situation. The cop in the other hand need to think fast and logically in the middle of distress and act accordingly base on police protocol in case if extreme situation arise.

[–]Phantom01 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I am not saying that I could do better. I don't personally need to be able to deal with such a situation. I am saying that other countries can hold their police up to a higher standard and that USA could too, as there is no evident problem that makes them unable to.

I am not trying to criticize an individual cop since they surely did their best, but I am saying that if other systems can provide their police with the ability to answer situations like this with more limited force, USA is failing by not doing so.
