I got 41. I think tests like this one simply state who you already are (or who you want to appear as, if you pick the "correct" answers depending on what type of person you want to be viewed as).

Empathy, being able to feel what another person feels. No, when I see someone in pain or crying, I do not really feel as strongly as they do. When I see a guy get his balls kicked or attacked, it might make me cringe a little, so that's definitely a sign I can simulate in my head the pain they're probably going through. When I see a video here of a person getting shot to death, I don't feel anything at all, probably because I haven't been shot before.

Does being empathic make one a good person? I don't think so. So what if a person can feel what others feel? What if a person cries if they see a person crying? Just because they can feel the same as others doesn't mean they're good. For example, in the ball attacking/kicking scenario, although I might cringe and probably imagine what my balls would feel like if I was the one attacked, that doesn't mean I don't find it funny. That doesn't mean I won't laugh if I saw somebody in real life get his balls kicked by an angry woman. Or let's take a criminal for example. A lady who scams the elderly out of money. She definitely knows how people getting scammed would feel like, but she simply doesn't care. She'll still scam people despite knowing the kind of pain she'll inflict on others.

Personally, I think empathy is both a weakness and a strength. I say it's a weakness when it's too powerful. I know people in real life who would actually cry just because they saw a sad story in the news. They'd cry and be bothered by it the whole day, unable to do their jobs properly. They'd feel stressed about it. I also think it's a strength, if you are not affected by it that much. For example, in business or anything that requires strategy, if you know how people will react to something, like for example, a business proposal you've come up, then you can plan accordingly and use their emotions to benefit you. If you know they are the types of people you can pressure into saying yes, then you keep pushing your proposal aggressively until they succumb. If you know they're the types of people who are strong and not susceptible to pressure, then you would revise your plan accordingly.

Anyway since this is WPD where we watch random people die in all sorts of horrible manner, I imagine most of us here don't have very high levels of empathy. Most of us are probably people who don't get affected that much emotionally by terrible things. People who are too empathic would probably be scared to even watch a single video or look at a static picture of a dead person. They'll probably think it's a "strong image" and be haunted by it for days to come, when to us it's just an every day thing that immediately leaves our minds the moment we click on another link on the internet.

I got 14. Not too surprised, tbh.

I'd kind of be interested in what it would look like if you'd have a few people take a test like this every year from let's say 10 years old for 50 years and then plot the data on a graph.

I don't have the resources nor the patience to do that myself though, so I guess it'll stay in the idea stage.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I also got exactly 14. I don't care about people too much but i've got a soft heart for animals. I have no problem seeing humans die/get tortured in videos, but seeing an animal get tortured would destroy me.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I bet the empathy starts growing a lot at say 30 or 40. By then lots of people have had someone close to them die. And they've had friends fall on hard times.

But people also get more conservative as they age. Okay I take it all back, I have no clue. Would be a cool experiment.

I got 26 which means I can fuck your mom while you watch and still enjoy the moment.

[–]0w0 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Snothing. Try fucking your own mom masked while forcing your bro or sis to bring in the dog and film, and then sent that vid to your buddies

[–]gungalar 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

I'we always seen myself as emphatic. I got 13. Do have aspergers though

[–]Snow 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

I think the concept of "empathy" is a lie, it's "echo chamber level" actually. The industry want more high "echo chamber level" people, therefore they create this BS concept.

[–]gungalar 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I think I get what you think, but emphaty have a clear definition: "Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference, that is, the capacity to place oneself in another's position. Definitions of empathy encompass a broad range of emotional states."

[–]Snow 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

How to test it? No method.

But you can being an echo chamber to looks like fulfil their standard.

[–]gungalar 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Perhaps a simple choice test isn't sufficient, but it can still tell a lot. And get some idea about a persons personality

[–]LastKnightShade 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I also have aspergers. I got 25 but it might be less since I've never really thought to ask people I know how they perceive the way I handle certain things.

[–]TwitchOSX 3 insightful - 4 fun3 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

I got 23. Apparently I'm a retard lol

[–]Mark_Taiwan 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

25, what the fuck?

29, I'm surprised it's that low but it makes sense, I guess.

[–]Theo_Fridall 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

same.

[–]Phantom01 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

17.

I think the test is false, I'm not that bad with people I choose. It's just that I'm not extremely empathetic and need to avoid groups I don't belong to.

[–]Jaylou 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The scale isn't the best tbh. Some of the questions have been shown to be completely unrelated to all 3 types of empathy which the scale was developed to measure, and a shortened version (something like 30 questions) has since been released which is a much more reliable measure of empathy. So you're right, I wouldn't take the results to seriously. I only know this because it's vaguely related to my phd lol.

[–]Snow 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Again, I think the concept of "empathy" is a lie, it's "echo chamber level" actually. The industry want more high "echo chamber level" people, therefore they create this BS concept.

52 although I expected more. I'm the most empathetic person I know (and not proud of it), I'm really good at reading social cues but that doesn't make make me a good person -- I think I "lost" points because I am super socially awkward and can be very blunt, it's just that I'm acutely aware of it without doing anything to change it. I keep apologising and trying to justify myself.

  1. Although I am actually a total softy. Especially when it comes to animals.

[–]PurpleHelmut71 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

1? I put 50!

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

A number followed by . at the start of a line is the start of an ordered list in Markdown. That's why it automatically "fixes" the numbers to start from 1. You'd have to escape it: \50. would work, I think. Or if that doesn't, 50\. should.

[–]Snow 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (6 children)

That's weird. I remember almost posting here, but I got sick of the quiz halfway through.

[–]Snow 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Yeah !

What I really want to know is how many people questioning this BS as the Milgram experiment.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Hahahaa. Yeah the Milgram shock experiments, what a crazy bastard.

Well I don't know how much you can take away from responses your post here... it is a fun post and many people like me have probably never heard of an empathy quotient.

But what a fun sub to post it to. Nice work here.

[–]Snow 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

The concept of empathy quotient is too difficult to test and too easy to lie with. And a lot of people wanted to lie on it.

I don't think the actual average result in this sub will higher than 10 if the test is trustworthy.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Hahhahaa.

It'd be cool if you could correct the survey results, knowing that people lie to make themselves look 20% better or something. Like take 20% off their score.

[–]Snow 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

If they are going to lie, the result won't be look 20% better only.

[–]Assman 1 insightful - 4 fun1 insightful - 3 fun2 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

Your score was 28 out of a possible 80.

Scores of 30 or less indicate a lack of empathy common in people with Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome.

lol wut?

"Scores of 30 or less usually indicate autism or signs of Aspergers syndrome".

Spot on. Diagnosed with Aspergers at age 15.

[–]RIPreddit 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

29 - Wasnt expecting it to be that low. Maybe its how I interpreted some options, specifically when people get very offended over words. What comes to mind for me is people that get upset over a joke.

60/80. I mean I was a veterinary technician and am currently an EMT, so empathy is very much required for both professions.

Whoooa. I thought i'd be way higher. I have a suspicion that I might be autistic or something. I feel retarded often. This is the first real indication that I might be. and I'm 33. I'm pretty avid about watchpeopledie.

I think it takes empathy to be a sadist. How can you derive enjoyment from another's suffering if you're incapable of perceiving or processing it? How can something excite you if you're indifferent to it?

A bit late but - I got a 20 probably because I'd rather not see animals get hurt, besides they have the right to live on this planet, we are just taking it for granted and destroying it. I also try and learn some empathy to fake it to make it or to have an advantage in business I guess.
