Just so that you're aware, George W. Bush knew there would be another influenza pandemic sooner or later, so he started the emergency procedures that would have been put into effect during a pandemic in the early 2000s. In 2006 SARS came along and it caused the early development of the vaccine against coronavirus. They've been working on developing a generic vaccine that could be used against any type of coronavirus for over 15 years. That's how they got it out so fast.

Side note: when they are producing an influenza vaccine, the virus is studied, they find out which variant is likely to take hold this year, and they make an antibody for that variant. They are not developing the entire flu shot from scratch - they have prior work to start out with. This is precisely the way that the COVID-19 vaccine was produced.

I am guessing they don't want to release any information about their internal security measures (secret tunnels and/or exits, security forces and weapons, camera locations, evacuation routes and tactics, etc.) It's probably SOP to not be able to release any of that info.

Just like in 9/11 they would not release any camera footage from the Pentagon. It's not that they don't have the footage, it's a top-secret just that the footage exists. The resolution, frame rate, camera angles (+any missing camera angles), showing the existence of any hidden cameras, EVERYTHING about that is information that you do not want released to the public. Remember that you are not only releasing it to the US citizens, you are releasing it to every enemy of the US forever.

Would you vote for Trump in 2024? by fschmidt in AskSaidIt

[–]yetanotherone_sigh 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

That's an interesting question. I, personally, write in candidates. I don't think I've voted for a (R) or (D) candidate on the ticket in the last 40 years.

Biden was a very mediocre candidate after the disaster that was Hillary. I think Bernie would have been a decent Populist president, but all of Congress (along with the DNC) would have been pulling against him, so he would not have gotten much done.

People voted for Biden simply because he wasn't Trump. Now that Biden has shown that he's not a very good President and he puts corporate interests in front of the people (as we already knew, but it pissed off the progressive far Left)... we are setting up a stage for Republicans to do very strongly in the midterms. Would Trump win in '24? I don't think so, since we know all of his true colors, but he'd make a showing. I think Biden would have to come to the table with something new in order to pull off a definitive lead.

I think almost any other Republican (other than race-to-the-bottom Idiocracy types like Marjorie Taylor Greene) would make a stronger showing than Trump. He has pissed off the Left, the Center, and even his own on the Trump Right wing of the GOP. His own people say that he doesn't pass his own purity tests as their Fuhrer. So I do not believe he'd win a fair fight if it was held today.

This is a disingenuous argument made in bad faith.

I literally don't care if an antivaxxer doesn't take the shot. What I do care is that both of our hospitals and ICUs in my county are 100% full. This is preventing me from having access to emergency medicine. The people in ICU are 99% unvaccinated covid cases. Regular medical vists are very hard to schedule, and elective surgeries are nonexistent. And just try getting an appointment with someone like a pulmonologist or a cardiologist.

I don't care if you're vaccinated or not. But if you want to die, die at home and don't clog up the system. And don't kill my grandmother.

I am also a Berniecrat. Fist bump. I voted for him in the primary (twice) and wrote him in during the general election (twice) because he wasn't on the ballot.

In terms of it being a leaky vaccine, you do have a point. And I think it got lost in the noise, being that this virus mutates fast, the whole point wasn't to eradicate the virus. We can't do that for the flu or the common cold either. The point was to keep the medical system from collapsing entirely. I saw the original report that was leaked from the Trump administration (220 pages long) analyzing all the ins and outs. If we had done nothing, 2.2 million people would now be dead. So we are doing some good, not enough.

I do think that medical insurance may start charging extra for no-vaxxers (or giving vaxxers a discount, which is the same thing). Since I don't set policy, and I really have no impact at all except for the town forum like this one... no one asked me, so my opinion doesn't really have any weight.

If the train companies had been doing their jobs... they used to employ "train detectives" to keep hobos from riding the train and keep thefts down. They don't do that much any more. Seems like a problem that security would deter just fine.

I am hearing stories that they are resorting to welding the cars shut when they are filled. When they arrive at the destination, someone with a cutting torch cuts them open.

[–]yetanotherone_sigh 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

There are some nuances to this. Hear me out.

If you are riding on a motorcycle and you don't want to wear a helmet, a lot of people are thinking that you are only risking your own life and that is a risk you should be willing to take. But you don't always just die. You could become a vegetable and have to be taken care of at government's expense. You could have children, and if you become a vegetable or die, the government has to take care of them.

If you are riding in a car without a seatbelt, similarly you're not the only one at risk. Your body becomes a missile and can injure or kill other people in the car. And, again, you might not die. My grandfather was a firefighter in the 60s and 70s before seatbelt use was widespread. His fire truck was t-boned by a drunk driver going 100mph. The fire truck was hit so hard it tipped onto its side. He spent weeks in the hospital and months recuperating before he could return to his job. The drunk driver was killed, of course.

If you go to public school or university, spreading disease is one vector where your own inadvertent actions can kill or disable others. So you have to have a very long list of vaccine injections by the time you are old enough for elementary school. They are compulsory or you cannot attend. That's the part that anti-vaxxers seem to not want to engage with. If you are resistant to taking a new vaccine, what about all the other dozens of them you had by the time you were five years old? Why no protest until now? If you were truly a staunch lifelong believer, wouldn't you have already protested?

I think anti-vaxxers should have to start their own schools or homeschool their kids. Stay out of public theaters, restaurants, stores, concerts unless they are willing to submit to PCR testing before entering, at their own expense. If you want to be a burden to society, you should pay the price for your burden. Isn't the republican party the party of personal responsibility?

One further thing I want to interject into the conversation: The bible says, if you are sick, you are to stay outside of town, cover your face with a piece of cloth, and shout "unclean! unclean!" if anyone tries to approach you. Whenever I point this out to a "Christian" anti-vaxxer, crickets.

Most people are at the "fuck this, let them die if they don't want to get vaxxed" stage. We've carried you all for a long time and we're done. Now you're just clogging up the hospitals and preventing normal people from getting care that has nothing to do with the pandemic.

So, lose your job. Die. I don't care. Just don't kill me or your kids while you're doing it.

A Yellowstone supervolcano eruption would be very bad. But magma takes a long time to percolate to the surface and it hasn't been doing that. So it won't happen instantly. News and media hype and movies aside, it takes a while. Mt. St. Helens in 1980 took about 2 months to go from no activity to a big eruption... they had lots of warning. And Mt. St. Helens had been dormant only since the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition. So it wasn't really dormant at all... just on a pause. Yellowstone is many orders of magnitude bigger than that, and will take a lot more time to become active.

Also, these quakes are like 600 miles away from there and are on the rim of the Pacific subduction zone (on the edge of the North American plate). So they are very unrelated events.

It's pretty simple and I'm surprised that more stores in these areas don't do this:

You put a big bulletproof plexiglass door in the front with a turntable or drawer in it, like they have in pot shops and banks and everything.

Customer comes up to the window. They are not allowed in the store. They talk into a speaker or use a kiosk to tell the employee what they want. The employee goes and gets the crap from the store and rings it up. Customer pays for it by putting cash in the drawer or running a card through an armored card reader. If it is paid properly, the order is dropped into the slot and the customer can retrieve it.

This isn't rocket science. If shoplifters take over, make it impossible to do. If shoplifters cannot get to the products, they cannot shoplift. 2" thick plexiglass is bulletproof and cannot be pried open. A linebacker can't take it down. You would need to install some 36" tall steel columns in front of the store to prevent someone from driving a car through the door. This is pretty standard stuff.

I live in a state where pot is legal to sell in licensed shops. They are all run this way. They have a small display area out front. You tell the salesperson what you want and pay for it. They take your money into the back and return with your product. Customers are never anywhere near the product or the cash register. Nobody ever tries to rob or shoplift at a place like this. They'd just lock the "airlock" on the bulletproof lobby doors and you'd get a ride to jail.

This dude knows what he's talking about. I used to go to pieces when I was alone for a week or so. Meditation helps. Finding internal peace helps. You need to find out that you are okay with being you. Find your own meaning and place in this universe without that being external to you (not within another person).

And do the physical things. Take a shower and brush your teeth. Go for a walk in the woods. Go outside at night and look at the stars away from city lights. Go for a drive to nowhere, a place you've never been before. Take a long hike. Work with your hands in the garage. Plant something in the ground. Do a hobby. Volunteer.

People are stressed out right now and need to have a release. Everyone is going through this. The sooner you find your own internal peace, the better off you will be.

A Warning Regarding Our Collapsing Healthcare Systems: Many Healthcare Workers Are Quitting or Taking Leaves of Absence Due to the Shot/Vaccine Mandates. by salvia_d in conspiracy

[–]yetanotherone_sigh 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Couple of points in the US. Hospital staff, particularly nurses:

Have quit because of terminal burnout / overwork

Have quit because of mask mandates

Have died because of Covid

Have had permanent injuries due to Covid, or are suffering from Long Covid symptoms and cannot work

Have left hospital nursing and went to work for a private practice or other less-stressful job.

All of this has led to the current shortage of nurses in the US. Now with fewer nurses to actually do the work, two things are happening:

  1. Hospitals cannot fill up to the capacity of the number of beds they have. They can only fill to a certain ratio of nurses to patients. There may be unused beds in a hospital, but they cannot have a patient in them because there is no one to take care of them.

  2. The remaining nurses are being worked harder and harder, leading to more burnout and more nurses leaving. This is a snowball effect that can only get worse as time goes on. The head of Alabama's medical system had a press conference last week and was in tears, saying "We don't know how much longer we can do this."

I've seen two postings for my area for nursing staff. They paid anywhere from $135 to $150 per hour, guaranteed at least 48 hours a week of work. No interview needed. You walk in, show them your credentials, get your paperwork filled out, and you get on the schedule. You are hired. They cannot fill all the available positions at $150 an hour.

Repeat: They cannot fill all the available positions at $150 an hour.

Every President since Reagan has had some involvement in Afghanistan. It's almost as if you create an instability in the region, you create terrorists. Keep swatting the hornet's nest, next time will be better.

Reagan -> CIA -> Supported Bin Laden "freedom fighters" against the Soviet Union. When we inevitably pulled out, we left the Mujahadin hanging and this caused them to become radicalized and eventually turned into Al Qaeda.

George W. Bush -> Invaded Afghanistan to go after Bin Laden. What was left of Al Qaeda radicalized further and created the Taliban.

What will be next? We shouldn't have ever been involved there at all.

If our 20 year, $2 trillion dollar involvement fell apart in a couple of weeks, there wasn't really any long term stability there, ever. This isn't Biden's fault. This isn't even Trump's fault. It isn't Obama's fault. It isn't W's fault. But they all share in it. Whoever was left holding the bag, the person who was POTUS when we inevitably pulled out, got stuck with it. Musical chairs.

This would be relatively easy to bypass, except that the BT authorization might be located on a board along with the battery management and other "smart" (integrated) technologies. If the BT device was separate and inline, you just clip a couple of wires and put in a wire nut to hotwire it.

Much simpler just to lock the tools up in the store. If you want one, they take it to the register and you buy it.

They already do this at some locations. In my location, the actual item is located in a locker below the display. If you want it, you get an employee, he gets it out of the locker and carries it up to the register for you. You are not allowed to touch it until you paid for it.

This isn't rocket science and it does not require bluetooth. This whole premise is silly.

Okay, just so that we can clear the air just a little here... this is not 100% pertinent to the article, but it is pertinent to the headline.

The "US" (meaning the government) does not buy and sell oil generally. US companies drill for oil, refine it, buy it on the international market, and sell it domestically and internationally.

In general, the US sells more oil than we import. This makes us a net energy producer, which - to give credit where credit is due - began under Trump. But it could be said under Trump as well... "The US is forced to import oil! Everyone panic and blame Trump." Because we buy and sell oil internationally every single day of every year. Cherrypicking to make a clickbait headline is disingenuous at best. People need to think critically and not react based on a headline.

To answer your question seriously: Not very many.

The most populous sub had 39,717 subscribers.

Many of those are bots. How many? Unknown.

I believe, without evidence, that many of those actual humans were one-time signups that are now gone. Reddit subreddit bans come in waves. Each time a big wave happens, it results in a wave of signups here out of a response of frustration and anger. Those people appear to sign up, look around a little, and then slowly trickle away when they realize that the site just really isn't that large.

You'd have to judge actual numbers on site engagement. Using the 90/9/1 rule of thumb, 90% of users are lurkers. 9% create an account and upvote and downvote and comment. 1% are content creators and submit new posts. So if you go by the front page, you have some posts that do not have any comments, just a few upvotes, and some posts make it to the front page without any upvotes at all.

So not very many active users. Using this post as an example, you have 16 comments and 16 upvotes. Using the 90/9/1 rule, around 160 people saw this post and 16 interacted with it. And this was one of the more active posts on the front page.

That's entirely within your rights to say...

But I had Covid-19 and it gave me all kinds of problems. If you are familiar with the symptoms of long covid, I had a whole list of them, such as a pulmonary embolism and a stroke. I am otherwise healthy and have had no cardiovascular issues my whole life. I have had shortness of breath for 6 months. I wouldn't wish that on anybody. As an anecdote, I work with a guy that now has 55% lung capacity due to permanent scarring because of covid.

For what it's worth, our 12 year old made the decision himself with the insight and assistance from 2 parents and a step parent.

So it's your right if you want to not take the shot and risk getting sick. There is a meme going around today of a cop who was anti-vax and said "I have an immune system, I don't need a vaccination". He died of Covid yesterday. The irony is thick but I feel sorry for his family. There have been a bunch of these including politicians.

I'm curious if you feel this way about other vaccinations you get when you're a child. When I was in elementary school many years ago, they didn't allow you to say no. You got the shot, or you weren't allowed to attend public school. This was for MMR and other common vaccinations at the time. How say you?
