Worms are not racist. They can infect anyone. When I was growing up in New Hampshire, USA, a white friend of mine said he got worms. I asked him how.... He said most likely from eating cold meat, like hot dogs, or deli slices of sandwich meat. Many people have parasites in them and do not even know it. When's the last time you got cleaned out?

It is interesting though that you simply don't see the range of anti-worm drugs being openly sold and prompted in the anglosphere like you do in places like Mexico. Also a big difference between kids and adults. It's not as if we aren't getting our hands dirty, in the UK most people garden. I wonder if there's a dietary difference which protects us somewhat.

Perhaps Americans have infections and do not even know it, while other cultures are better informed and recognize which symptoms are from parasites.

One of the best ways to protect ourselves from infection is to thoroughly cook our food before eating. But when the food corporations slip on their processing and do not safely prepare the food, their unsuspecting customers could get infected. I hear it every year, especially in raw vegetables that were sprayed with animal manure, and the customers eat it raw.

Related: "Every year, one in six Americans gets sick from food, 128,000 people are ill enough to go to the hospital for their symptoms, which typically include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea."

Parasitic worms don't come from gardens, unless you are using human waste as fertilizer.

Many parts of Mexico do not have indoor plumbing.

I have heard that also animal feces can contaminate vegetables.

It can, but is far less common because most parasites are adapted to their host. Also it is not infecting the vegetables, it is at best on the outside of the vegetable and can easily be washed off. Places where people shit on the street or the beach will literally have parasite eggs blowing in the wind.

These are Nigerians where a lack of proper sanitation makes them more susceptible.

I took dewormer when my last pair of cats had persistent worms. I don't know if it was hypochonria or not, but worms crawling out of their butts freaked me the f out. The tests were always negative for parasites but I also recently found out the doctor wasn't using the proper protocol for testing.

LOL, I have actually seen the same with a couple of our indoor cats. I understand it's not a pleasant sight. These are cats that don't go outside, which makes me wonder if the pet food manufacturers are to blame for introducing parasites through their food.

Those cats of mine were indoor cats too. I had no idea how they got them, the food is a possibility.

You showed a video months ago that indicates you tolerate rat infestations. Perhaps tabby got a hold of a few mice and rats in your house.

The rat in my workshop has been gone for months. My cats stay inside the house and never go out there. However, I did see a neighborhood cat around the workshop at about the same time the rat disappeared.
