Interestingly, scholars tend to think that "molok" is probably not a god but and adjective referring to a type of child sacrifice.

The reason that is was interpreted by later translators as a god, was motivated by a desire to avoid the uncomfortable realisation that the child sacrifices were to Yahweh, not some foreign god.

On the other hand there's no archaeological evidence of sites of large scale child sacrifice in Israel like there are in some Carthaginian and Punic sites.
