Bolt action only? Okkaaaaaay

Wait, no full metal jackets? 30 seconds at least between shots? Ohhhh this a range for shooting muskets. Got it.

This can't be real, can it?

Like the driver, I'm confused by those rules. Whoever wrote them did not even understand the differences between semi-automatic and automatic weapons. It is certainly not real and was not intended to be logical. I should have put it in /s/jokes. Thanks for your interest though.

I'm not an American, and I've never been to a firing range, so I'm a little lost as to what the issue is. The things I saw that struck me as odd were:

No semi-auto weapons? Does that mean you can only fire weapons you have to manually cock/load? Aren't almost all modern weapons at least semi-auto?
No assault weapons? Forgetting the argument that all weapons are assault weapons, isn't that kind of the reason you go to places like this? To shoot cool guns?
Shot no faster than 1 every 30 seconds?... I don't know anything about guns, but I know that's a crazy amount of time to just sit there, twiddling your thumbs between shots.

Am I right?

You gave good answers to your own questions and that's why he's putting his car in Reverse. May I ask where you live? If you'd rather not answer, that is fine. I am from the US but have not lived there for a loooong time and no plans to go back. The reasons are mostly about wars. It's hard to separate the two.

I'm an Aussie. We prolly have gun ranges here some place, but I've never really looked into it. I've hunted farm pests like foxes, rabbits and crows with guns before, but never been to a place where the intent is to learn to shoot or shoot for fun.

I was just checking my logic, in essence. I could sit here and laugh at how insane the rules sounded, but I'd be doing so really ignorantly because, for all I knew, those were all normal safety rules and it was the rule about needing a member to be with you that people thought were draconian and everyone would balk at me thinking 1 shot every 30 seconds seemed a little heavy handed.

I should not have reposted that thing since even level-headed people like you (and me?) are confused by it and more confusion in this world is not needed. I hope you're enjoying saidit. It is small — not a huge bloody mess like reddit — but it is just the right size for me.

Don't be daft, mate. It's fine! I won't get every joke, and that's perfectly normal. :)
Saidit is great. It's nice to see people post things and talk about them without dancing on egg shells. Very peaceful and fun. Even the arguing is good natured.

Agree.

The one that seems most onerous to me is "no full metal jacket ammunition." I'm not an expert, but it seems to me that allows for 1) really expensive personal protection / hollow-point ammo, or 2) really cheap .22-caliber ammo that's just plain lead.

Just not sure what the intent is there.

[–]NastyWetSmear 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I assumed that the purpose of not allowing outside, specialised ammunition was to:

1) Ensure the quality of the ammo and, thus, the safety of the place. Don't want people bringing stuff from home that could be old, home made or home modified.

2) Ensure the safety of the equipment. Different types of ammo have different types of results, right? If you've got targets set up to take regular gunfire and someone comes in with a FMJ and starts pumping them straight through the target and into the wall, it could cause an issue.

But it looks like u/Musky has us covered with the details. :)

I thought about it some more, and I think they're wanting people to shoot soft-point hunting ammo. I forgot about that category, which is "ball ammo" but not quite FMJ. I guess that makes sense.

On a long distance shooting range (500m or more) these rules would be OK I guess. I mean, I’d put up with stupid rules like this to be able to shoot on a long distance range, since there aren’t many of them around and I’d likely be using a bolt action and spending more than 30 seconds between shots anyway.

But if there was any other option whatsoever, I absolutely wouldn’t go there.

Guys, guys, it was intended as a joke by whoever made it and it wasn't me.

[–]NastyWetSmear 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

No, it's okay! I'm sure it's funny... It's just that I didn't know how it was funny because I've never been to a shooting range, so I didn't know which of those was draconian and which was normal. I just wanted to be in on the fun.

These are standard rules for commercial gun ranges besides the "assault" rifle ban which is stupid. That's why it's nice if you know someone with their own private range.

The rules are all geared towards not damaging the range with rapid inaccurate shots or full metal jacketed rounds with more penetration power. Safety is a factor too, you don't want ricochets or wild shots..

No semi auto fire doesn't mean no semi-automatic guns, just again with the restriction on not firing rapidly.

Thanks, mate.
I guess I'm only really used to seeing them on TV shows and movies, where it's either someone experimenting with something being bullet proof, often involving shooting an automatic weapon into it, or people shooting much faster than every 30 seconds.

[–]Musky 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

You should go to a range sometime for target practice, it's fun even with the restrictions. The main downside is you can't practice shooting as you would if you were addressing a real life threat, where you would not be waiting 30 seconds between shots, but it's still useful for improving accuracy.

[–]NastyWetSmear 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Well I dunno if we have them here, and we certainly don't have guns for self defence here. The circumstances under which I'd be shooting a gun at someone would be pretty dang unusual. I'm more likely to need to fight someone with a knife or a cricket bat.

Citation needed. I've been to many ranges, even in California, and never seen rules like this.

For instance, here's the rules for the LA Gun Club, in the heart of commiefornia. Note the one shot per second rule. https://www.losangelesgunclub.com/general-6-1

Weird. I've never not seen similar rules.
