It was peak 'gaslighting' in 1897, then fell off until it began spiking around 1998.
There's nothing for 'virtue signaling', but the non-corrupted version is necessary for a society. Signaling you're not going to randomly murder someone or violate other accepted norms can be considered a virtue in most societies. Only becomes a problem when the norms get distorted and ridiculous.
