That's not true. it has never been about love. It is only after hollywood started selling the romance propaganda that it became about love. Marriage has always been transactional. Dowry is a good proof of that.

ok wait maybe I'm just a simple country lawyer, but isn't dowry something that rich people do? Most of the poors cannot afford such luxuries.

    It's a way to control the masses. It's why religious institutions mandate that everyone get married and have kids even though most religions are supposed to discourage it.

    Jesus, and the most famous apostle, Paul, were both like, "Getting married is not advisable, it's nothing but trouble and a distraction." The pulpit now? "Get married and follow traditional gender roles and have at least 2 kids or burn in hell for all eternity." And "You're obligated to marry unless you have the 'gift of celibacy', which you don't have and literally no one but Jesus and Paul ever had it or will have it, so get married or else!".
