The board will try to "reach a compromise" when in fact they are sabotaging the org at the behest of whomever. It's akin to terrorism. Any "compromise" reached will be void and null before it is even expressed because they are behaving exactly like terrorists.

Need I get into the reasons why people don't negotiate with them?

The staff didn't offer a compromise, only an ultimatum. The board members' positions are forfeit either way.
