China tends to take extreme action to quell any sort of uprising. They used such dynamics to topple the ROC back in the day they are very much aware of the danger it poses to their current social order if things get out of hand.

The situation is rather precarious. I suspect their insistence on zero COVID policies at this point is a convenient excuse to shut down potential political demonstrations without expressly indicating to the public that is what they are doing.
