      American prisons are not the topic of this thread.

      The topic here is that a "darling" of the mainstream media is sitting in a Russian jail/prison and she is most likely going to serve all of that time and maybe even more than nine years.

      What if they agree to release her, but only if ______?

      That was not my experience, and the one I was in has a pretty bad reputation.

        The American criminal justice system is largely built on people taking terrible plea bargains out of fear of prison. It just makes things easier for the judges, the cops, and the lawyers on both sides. If you go into a criminal proceeding where you're the defendant with the mindset "staying out of prison is my absolute #1 priority," these people will use that to their advantage.
