The American criminal justice system is largely built on people taking terrible plea bargains out of fear of prison. It just makes things easier for the judges, the cops, and the lawyers on both sides. If you go into a criminal proceeding where you're the defendant with the mindset "staying out of prison is my absolute #1 priority," these people will use that to their advantage.
