I think there's a reason you never see that style beyond art classes. It looks impressive but it's shading, and the shadows aren't usually the most important part of composition. Like why people don't take selfies with a flash light under their face just cause it makes neat shadows.

But clearly the drawings with shading are far superior. How can you call it a style? It's part of most styles.

I'm not against shading, but that particular type of shading can be done better by a computer. Not that it's perfect, but it would take me forever (and it would probably look worse) to replicate what a selfie and a filter can do. My philosophy is leave to the computers and cameras what those do well. Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's.
