You hit the nail on the head. A lot of dumb people obsess over "high society". I think is a subconscious ego driven behavior. They find their intelligence lacking so they can't base their own value on intelligence or they would have to feel they are always less then everyone around them. So instead they base their ego on how "high class" they are. To service that ego they adopt all the superficial behaviors and attitudes associated with rich people.
