I wouldn’t drop the topic, but I would depoliticize it. What Id be more concerned about is: do his reasons for wanting to be a woman make any sense? Would he actually be better off that way? Are his expectations realistic?

Him having wacky political views is nothing compared to him doing potentially irreversible things to himself on a bad premise.

To be clear, transition is probably the right choice for some people, but it’s so trendy these days that I just don’t trust that everyone who claims that identity has good reasons for it.

you make good points. i haven't spoke to him in around a week (not related to any arguments, we just haven't found the time to talk) but next time we talk i should probably ask him the questions you have. i don't think his expectations are realistic, nor would he be better off that way. i think he expects to look exactly like a biological female and sound like one as well. he struggles with low self-esteem, so i think even if he went through the transition there wouldn't be much of a difference in mental health, as he would eventually realize most people don't transition smoothly. i want the best for him, but i also don't want to hurt him either.
