People's lives are more important than economy IMO. Capitalism has to be on hold. Now for whether they want to die, I guess they don't have an option for euthanasia? Your dad saying he is in pain and wants to die, can't you slip some drug in his IV? Tough decision. Sounds like the gf wants to live. Tough decisions but yeah need to save lives. My old boss died from this recently, his wife is devastated.

Many argue that we aren't actually saving lives with this shut down, just trading one group of people's lives for another. Poverty is the biggest killer of all, and now millions more people are being thrown into poverty because a lot of businesses that were shuttered will never re-open. Many people lost health insurance and can no longer go to the doctor to be diagnosed/treated timely to prevent a devastating illness. Many people who are currently sick with a disease, such as cancer, that could be cured if caught early enough won't get it caught early because basic physicals aren't being allowed anymore. I do not believe for a minute that we are saving lives for the long haul.

I don't think anyone has died due to the economy being down. You have mentioned some but any proof? If someone has a life threatening illness that is still considered essential to treat. Elective surgeries are postponed. They did the stimulus and unemployment so people don't starve due to bad economy. This virus really is pretty bad, it is killing thousands. I do agree the shut down can't last forever, and the idea is to slow it down so not as many have it at the hospitals at the same time which overwhelm the doctors.

What is essential in the economy? Doctors, cops, firemen etc. Food. Pharmacies. Not much else.

Movie theaters gotta be shut down. Frivolous stuff. The workers there, give them some sort of stimulus money, unemployment etc till this is done. Now if and when repubs refuse to keep giving out those checks, then we have problems. Looting in the streets. The lockdown having to end too soon. Millions dying rather than just thousands. I don't know what the future holds but I hope that's not it.

What I was trying to say is that I believe ultimately more people will die as a result of this than are saved now: all the examples I used are of how not being able to access "non-essential" health care now and/or have money to access health care in the future as causing health problems that would not have existed had the lock-down not happened.

There are only a few hotspots in the country where the virus is a big problem. They shouldn't be locking up people in areas that are not susceptible to outbreaks; sure measures like banning large gatherings and quarantining the "at risk" should be in place, but not locking down everyone indefinitely. According to Bill Gates, the plan is to keep everyone locked up indefinitely until a vaccine is out: https://off-guardian.org/2020/04/04/did-bill-gates-just-reveal-the-reason-behind-the-lock-downs/

what if it's not so prevalent in other places cuz the lockdown there is working

I don't believe that to be true for many reasons. First and foremost, weather seems to be a factor, so cities that don't have the right weather are unlikely to have a massive outbreak: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/22/health/warm-weather-coronavirus.html

Sweden they didn't lock down and they have a death toll % similar to the US? https://dcwhispers.com/report-sweden-ignored-coronavirus-fears-kept-economy-open-yet-has-a-mortality-rate-similar-to-americas/

South Dakota didn't lock down and isn't having a massive outbreak: https://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/health-care/item/35544-south-dakota-has-flattened-the-curve-without-shutting-down

And it looks like the virus has been circulating since at least December, and lots of people have already had it and are already immune: https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/494200-california-gov-orders-autopsies-back-to-december-to-find-out-how-long?fbclid=IwAR3F_TGpKQNoY1YTtvnzIWk45r1DiH3UDlsGpVlzDo75hujDOcSEXUlyfGA and https://komonews.com/news/coronavirus/seattle-flu-study-allegedly-tested-samples-for-covid-19-against-federal-state-guidelines

I can cite more reasons, if you don't feel like this is convincing enough.

south dakota governor said people could choose to lockdown or not if they want, many did out of caution. so had 63 people get sick. Looks like they were smart. It is unsure if the temperatures do effect this like with the flu, hopefully it does and this summer we are all fine. Now Fauci said it will come back in the fall. People insult Trump a lot but I think he has actually done a good job in having the lockdown go on, not so much as a federal order but let states decide to do it. I think a lot of people got scared seeing what happened to Italy so they voluntarily stayed home. 50,000 did die which sucks. Being immune, hope that is case but we don't know for sure yet. I just don't want to get this at all. I am worried this is like lyme disease, or other viruses like herpes, oh it doesn't kill you but just makes life worse forever. I feel like a lot of healthy people don't realize the repercussions from catching something like this. Can kill you if old. But even if you survive it, it makes life worse. You know how many are against vaccines, well you get a ton as a child, and yeah you are immune to a lot of life threatening things which is great, but they can have complications themselves. But what to do to never catch any virus or disease, stay at home for ever, obviously no that is not realistic. But at the same time do you freely go up to a sick person and let him sneeze on you, no you wouldn't even if there was no coronavirus around right? I'd rather err on the side of caution. Just like I don't go out into woods in the summer anymore because ticks can bite you, I probably won't be going to places with big crowds ever again. I will still go out and live my life just avoid the big crowds.
